2021, Oct. 28-31: Hungry Mother Rally
The rally at Hungry Mother State Park this year will be the last full weekend in October and will include Halloween, Oct. 28-31. The rally is in Burson Campground with overflow in Creekside Campground, about 2 miles further into the park. Last year Burson did fill up.
I have strong hopes that by then, COVID restrictions will have eased up and we can renew both the Friday group VA Creeper Trail bike ride and the Saturday dinner at the Harvest Table restaurant. I'll post more details on those events as they become known.
I hope to repeat the Cowboy Stew and SUMI Salad dinner on Thursday. This is just my contribution to the rally and NOT a pot luck. If there is something you make and would like to share please feel free, that adds to the fun, but I ask that you not buy something at the supermarket to bring. Last year a couple of folks did that and it went mostly to waste. I hate waste.
I will also have hot coffee and conversation available in a CLAM shelter every morning.
There's lots to do in the area, like great hiking trails of all levels, the ride up the Back of The Dragon to Tazewell, VA, some nice, local museums, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, and more.
I look forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones. More information as it becomes available or as I think of things I forgot.
Walt

Dates?
This is one week later than last year and really hurts the connection with going straight from Davey Crockett.
The site we usually like for this new date is already booked. Trying to change but want to confirm that 28-31 are the final dates?
What's evrybody doing between Davey Crockett and the new Hungry Mother date?

Hi there.
Yeah, and I dithered about that a bit.
The history is that for the first few years I held it the first weekend in November as a late Fall event.
Then s group decision was made to move it up to the last full weekend in October so we could have a group dinner at the park restaurant.
Well, then the park decided to shut the restaurant altogether and in 2019 we had that great dinner at the Harvest Table restaurant. That was the plan again in 2020 but foiled again, this time by the COVID.
This year the last full weekend in October is the latest it could possibly be. But a week earlier would conflict with another rally. I waited to be sure of that before making the decision.
As it is I chose not to move it back to November since October seemed to suit more people. So there it is. As often happens, no date is perfect for everyone.

I haven’t been to Hungry Mother since 1973 when I participated in a sports car event there. I’m putting you on my calendar and hoping for the best. I have this old Burro with no “facilities” so I’ll need to get reasonably close to rest rooms/showers.

I’m getting there... if I use my laptop instead of my iPad, I think I can make it work. Are there still good spaces available?

The ReserveAmerica site is not the easiest to navigate, but yes, there are still openings available, both site specific and non reservable.
Thanks for sticking with it and I look forward to meeting you when we gather.

Some of the reservation sites are not the best. Yes there are some. There are at least 2 kinds there: Site Specific and not. If it's not specific, you will be assigned or get to pick from those available when you get there? Something like that. I choose a site specific one, that way I know which one I have.

Hi Neal. Yeah, all fingers, toes and eyes crossed for the trail and the dinner.
Looks like we should all be vaxxed by then.

Of course, the South African variant is now on the loose and apparently can infect you even if you've had Covid 19 or the vaccine.
Don't hold your breath.
