After too long, Pearl, Queenie, Max the Van, Ollie and I will be taking off for most of Sept. to do some part of the Lewis & Clark Trail. Ollie is going to drive from Felton, CA (near Santa Cruz) to Missoula, where he will meet me at the airport. We will then camp somewhere in that area or toward the west for two weeks. I've heard that Big Fork is very nice, but my guess is that there are other things more remote and beautiful. We like dry camping especially. That's all the time I have, then must fly home from somewhere. I had thought about flying home from Portland, but that's started to sound too rushed. The question is, what should we do? Anyone live near there, or will be camping in that area? What about Lolo Trail or whatever it's called. Is that doable with our equipment?

Marlene and I spent a couple of days At the Big Hole Nat'l Battlefield south of Missoula last fall. A very beautiful but sad spot. The army attacked the sleeping Nez Perce camp of Chief Joseph's people here.

There a couple of Forest Service Campgrounds on 43 just west of the site. We stayed at the one closer to the park..

We were in Glacier in June. We stayed in Hungry Horse which is about 10 minutes from the west entrance of Glacier National Park. The name of the park is Mountain Meadows and it is one of the nicest campgrounds we've ever been in.

Hi friends,
It's Thursday night here and within a radius of 50 miles of Missoula we have 13 active fires (some are from sparks from nearby blazes that are likely to 'join up'. I live in southwest Missoula and we have been having evacuation alerts tonight, Saturday night, etc. Saturday night the sky to my west looked like a gigantic barbeque (5 mi. from the flames) One big blaze is closing rt12 near Lolo Pass. Check out MONTANAFIRES.COM & say a prayer for those folks in the line of fire (not me, thank God).
The National Guard arrived today to monitor things and the air is thick with smoke. But who knows? September might be different indeed. Don't give up on Montana.

ps Glacier Park was closed last week and all visitors evacuated. It's open now with major restrictions, however.

Mia, thanks for the updates on the fires.
I will call Glacier Park on Sept 5th and check on the fires and
than deside if we will come to Montana.
I know how you people fell about fires in your area, we had the
500,000 acre fire last year in So. Oregon.

Well, I've booked the trip and there's no turning back. Ollie, Queenie and Pearl leave Camp Redwood (Felton, CA) on Sept 6 and head north. On Sept 12 I fly into Boise, where they meet me and escort me to some fine rustic campground, where Pearl is already set up. Then we tool around the area until Sept 28, when I leave from Missoula, and O, Q and P head back home. This will give us options in case the fires are still bad. I remember at the Colorado rally last year, there were bad fires in Rocky Mtn park, but they were not close to where we all were, so I'm hoping the same for this year.

Best wishes to those of you who are near the fires. Remember the story last year about the couple who had completed their dream home, and ordered their new Casita. A week before it arrived, their home burned, but they had loaded their tow vehicle with all the things they would need to go pick up the Casita. They escaped with all they needed...never did hear what happened.

I live near Bozeman Mt and its beautiful here. Send me an email if you want me to gather up some information on the West Yellowstone area and campgrounds in the area. We are on 10 acres and you could always park your rig here for a bit also. We have a beautiful view of the Bridgers and Spanish Peaks not to mention the Tobacco Root Mountains.
