OK folks, June 7-9 is fast approaching and the Washington Gathering (WAG) needs to start taking shape. Although I’m not much of an organizer, Mike Price sort of put me up front on this one so here are some thoughts. Feel free to interject your ideas.

First of all, I don’t want to put a hoax on the event by bringing up the “R Word” but face it, this is western Washington and we need to be prepared. Anyone who can, bring a canopy and/or tarps/ropes and such if for no other reason than to make a potluck some semblance of comfortable in case the R Word shows up.

I think we’ll ride on the coattails of the Oregon gathering and try a hotdog roast/beer exchange on Friday evening. Along with that, I have decided to also try a chocolate table. Not necessarily an exchange but rather a “bring some chocolate, put it on a table and then pick and choose”. As with the beer exchange where no Bud, Miller or Pabst is allowed, no Snickers, Hersheys or the like allowed on the chocolate table. Any questions??

Saturday evening potluck seems to be a common theme at these gatherings so that’s what we’ll do here.

Also following the historical Oregon requirement, name tags are encouraged even if you are wearing buffalo plaid…….

Bring lots of firewood for the fires if you have room to haul it. Not sure if Donna D can be talked into her fire pit but that would be appreciated.

I have a contact in the area that is going to let me know the lake level and the fishing prospect a few days before and I will pass that information on. As most of you know, this is Free Fishing Weekend so no license is required.

Message me with your thoughts if I have overlooked anything or if you have other ideas.

The fire pit is no more. We burned it up at the Spring NOG. I knew it was headed for the dump because of the cracks at the bottom. But, we did get a couple more hot fires out of it. When I went to dispose of it, the bottom completely separated.

Maybe someone else has one? I have another one coming, but won't have it until the Oregon Gathering in July.

Getting Close

So, things are looking up weather wise and I have a good feeling about this gathering!! This gathering is going to be pretty loose and if anyone wants to suggest anything other than what I am thinking, feel free.

Friday evening—open fire hotdog roast & beer exchange. A 6 pack of your favorite micro brew beer to exchange 1 for 1. Remember, no run of the mill brews. Bring your own hotdogs & fixins. Marshmallows/S'mores are also allowed. This is where I thought about the chocolate table. Bring some kind of chocolate to put out on a table to exchange with others.

Saturday during the day is do whatever you want to do. I am still in the process of checking the latest fishing report and will let you know mid-week how things are shaping up. Once again, this is free fishing weekend so no fishing license is required. Saturday evening—potluck. You all know what that involves. Chuck is bringing one big table and I have another smaller one. As of right now it doesn't look like we'll be needing any overhead shelters. Whoo Hoo!!!!

If you can bring any firewood, we'll need some for a couple of fires both nights. Donna's fire pit crashed so we'll just rely on one of the built in grate pits. The location for the fire/hotdog roast/potluck has yet to be determined but most likely at a site near the grass field so we'll have more room. We can wait to see how it all shakes out and play it by ear. Safe travels……

Cool Some Ideas

Okay, so I will drink my own Bud Light. So there.

If some bring their RC cars, we can hold races.*

Frisbee is always a good thing.

Bring a musical instrument.

Taidnapam is not conducive to kites.

We can play card bingo. Bring a deck of cards. Also some small prizes.*

* - Ideas from Good Sam gatherings called Samborees.

Not much time left. This is early Wednesday so we leave tomorrow. CYA

These are all off the cuff. Nothing organized, you understand.

Fishing

FISHING REPORT FOR RIFFE LAKE @ Taidnapam

The fishing is good but maybe not as good as last year from the bridge and shore near the bridge.

The best method of catching the Coho is with shrimp fished under a float. Believe it or not, cooked shrimp....the little tiny guys.....work just as well as raw ones. And, if the fishing isn't all that great, you can eat your bait!! Hook size 6 and smaller with any kind of float/bobber and a little lead weight.
You can also catch these fish by casting small lures. A small cooler is recommended to keep the fish you catch on ice. The limit is 5 fish/day and no license is required this weekend, Saturday and Sunday.

This could very well be what I call "combat fishing" since it is free fishing weekend and if the fish are really in there in good numbers. Should be a fun time though. Even if the fishing stinks, it sure beats staying home mowing lawns and pulling weeds!!!

Looking forward to a sunny Washington weekend!

Kim,
I snapped up Chuck and Vickie's open site - #282, and we'll be there Friday afternoon, IF WE CAN FIND a way to bypass I-5 (tonight's news said that I-5 North of Seattle will all be closed, from Friday night until Monday at 5AM).
HELP. How should the Oregonians plan on getting up there???

Barbara, are you coming up from Oregon? If so, there is NO problem as the park is south of Seattle, not north of Seattle.

When you live in a small Oregon town everything is far North. Morton,Washington is on US12 East of I-5.

They're closing I-5 between the converge of I-5 and I-205 outside of Vancouver FRIDAY NIGHT AT 11pm. Barbara, you'll be fine getting there, it's getting home that may be a PITA:

Not sure which way your coming from. Oregon (south) or North of Seattle.

Google Maps directs us From everett to

Go I-5 S to Interstate 405 S toward Bellevue/Renton

Take exit 2A to merge onto WA-167 S toward Kent/Auburn9

Take the exit onto WA-512 W toward WA-161 S/Puyallup/Olympia.

Take the exit toward Eatonville

Turn left onto 31st Ave SW

Continue straight onto WA-161 S/Meridian Ave E, Continue to follow WA-161 S

Turn left onto Center St E

Continue onto Alder Cutoff Rd E

Turn left onto WA-7 S/National Park Hwy

Turn right onto WA-7 S

Turn left onto US-12 E

Turn right onto Kosmos Rd

Continue onto Bridgeover Rd

Sharp left onto Champion Haul Rd

See the Park ent

From Oregon I would guess I-5 to Hwy 12 exit to Morton and then follow the rest of the same directions above.
