Hi all:

Sue and I were just talking about heading south. We've done the coast line extensively and would like to check out the central and eastern areas of these 2 states. We are not partial to private camgrounds (they'd have to be pretty special) and prefer state parks and forestry sites.

Any reccomendations you can give would be appreciated.

Rick, I hate to admit it, but I've never taken my egg to any of the state parks along the Oregon coast, only tented. But until you hear from someone, here's a link to the Oregon State Park system. http://www.oregonstateparks.org/index.php

Rick, you say that you want to go south by the way of central or
eastern Hwy's. Can you tell me whitch Hwy's you want to take so
I can see if I can help you. I have been from so.Oregon on I 5 ,97and some of 395 in to Washington. I know of some real nice places to camp, and by the way how long of time do you have? Jay

Jay: We'll probably be going for 10 days. As I have said I have done the coastline many times and now we want to see something new.

Example: Maybe head south on I-5 to Everett and over to Leavenworth and then to Spokane and Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. Or head south via central Washington to Mount Hood and The Gorge in Oregon

Jay what are your favorites that stick out in your mind? Note: I only mention cities as a reference - we prefer the one horse towns (or less) when ever possible

Rick, the places you are talking about would be a nice trip, we have
been from Evertt to Leavenworth on Hwy. 2 and is a nice trip.
Leavenworth is a must see, we stayed at the KOA right on the river
and close to town. Haven't been to Spokane or Coeur d Alene but
hope to in Sept. If you go south to Oregon from Leavenworth on 97
at the Columbia river their is a nice Washington SP campground
( Maryhill ) you camp by the river and can see the trains and the barges go by. than you can take Hwy. 84 west in to the Columbia
river george to MT Hood and if you have more time you can see the waterfalls on the old Hwy and must see is Multnomah falls right on 84. Their is a state campground west of Bonneville, haven't been to it so can't give you any info on it. If you had more time and were coming south down in to oregon than I could tell you about a lot of places to camp and things to see.
When do you think you are going to take your trip? and if I can be of more help fell free to ask and I know that their is more people out their that can add to this. Have a great trip . Jay

Rick, if you head down I-5, plan on going east at Roseburg on Route 138. Go on up to Crater Lake. There are some beautiful State campgrounds on Rt 138 between Glide and Crater Lake. If you plan on going that way, let me know and I will give you more specifics. You must see Crater Lake. It's the deepest lake in North America and very beautiful.

Nancy, don't forget about all those great waterfalls on 138, with all
the rain and snow they will be going full blast.

Rick,I know you said that you had only 10 days so you won't have time to see everything, we live here and don't have time to see everything. So many places to see so little time.

Rick,

For a *completely* different view of Washington State, head for the scablands around Grand Coulee. It's the site of the worlds largest volcanic flow, and the terrain is strange and wonderous. Sun Lakes has a wonderful state park and three very different lakes to play in. Bring a canoe if you have one-- though I think there are rentals there now.

Make it a point to visit the Dry Falls interpretive center. More amazing geology. Here's your key to the parks system:
