Question BARGMAN L-400 Door Latch - need front outter half or whole assembly

Bought an 81 Canadian Boler 1300 Trailer a while back and was hoping to do a full restoration after the new year and would like to find a replacement BARGMAN L-400 latch if possible. I have one that came with my trailer but the front half has a small crack on one of the corners and the other corner is bent in slightly.

if someone has one for a reasonable price please msg me, email or phone.

I live in canada but can also ship to an address in Port Huron, MI if someone in the US has one available.

Thanks for your time,

I'd also think a Bargman L-66 door lock/latch assembly could work instead. so i'd be interested in one of these also.

think these are even more expensive tho?

thanks for looking.

Bargman L400 and L66 are both discontinued and very hard to find. There are a few locks and repair kits that surface every year on Ebay. Both are often sold between 300 and 500$ New or refurbished.

The L66 has a great advantage over the L400: the most wanted spare part (the latch) is now available as an upgraded reproduction for 20$ at L-66 Latchbolt. That reproduction is advertized to be made of a more rugged metal than original.

I suggest you create a search on "Bargman Lock" on Ebay setting the search to warn you by Email whenever something shows up. This is how I found a refurbished L400 (275$) in July and a L400 rebuild kit (120$) in August (so I can fix my old one). Note that there are variations of the L400 lock but they all use the same brittle zinc casting latch.

You think L66 is a valid replacement for L400 (I can't confirm it is the case or not). If so, there are some brand new L66 available on Ebay right now for 500$. Add the cost of a spare latch (20$) and I'm pretty sure you can auction you old L400 for about 100$ or more, depending on condition. Quite a few people have stocked the repair kits, when they were below 50$. If cosmetic condition is good, a refurbished lock can sell for 300$. Refurbishing such lock is a matter of 20 minutes or so. There is room for profit and lots of desperate buyers. This would be a completely different picture if a latch reproduction was available for the L400. I think most users could repair their own and prices would drop considerably for the L400.

Note that L300 (square shape) has similar problems and pricing, with no available parts.

Good luck
