This little guy was just plain fun.
Does he ever look kool on the windshield of a car at an event.

Great work, James.

I could never aspire to your level of carving, it is fantastic. I do a lot of woodworking, much of it for a living. I am building a solo cedar stripper right now too.

Good luck with your stripper. Post some pictures.
Carve a yoke
Carve a paddle
Carve a design on it.
The rest just takes on a life of it's own.

HERE is a link to my photos of the canoe build, other than ones of fairing it. Right now it is 100% ready for glassing the outside of the hull.

I do plan to make a paddle or two, but doubt I will be doing much carving. Maybe if you were out west for a visit.......................

Even cut your own trees. Impressive! Nice work on the canoe. As to visiting the west. Our daughter lives in Grand Prairie so we tow the trailer up the Yellowhead every year or two. (I love the drive around Lake Superior and across the Prairies and prefer not to fly.) Last summer we toured from Grand Prairie to Jasper down to Brooks and spent some time around the badlands and Cyprus Hills Prov Park. If I had the time I'd love to make a photo documentary of the old log homestead homes in your province before they are gone. The many little outbuildings on the farms all leaning with the prevailing winds would also make a good subject. And I don't think I'd run out of museums to visit.

My latest musical attempt. A fretless gourd five string banjo.

Nice work James! I only possess enough artistic talent to know what looks good, and that looks fantastic! Do you also play the banjo?

I say that I play AT it. I'm probably a better builder than musician but people are polite and say "that's nice" when I play. Sometimes they even recognize the tune.

Here is a strum stick like instrument made from an old broken banjo, a broken guitar and a hand carved neck. They call it a dulcijo or a banjimar.

Did pretty good at the Woodstock Wood Carving show this past weekend. Third in musical instruments, second in caricature and a first in nature scenes. There were entries from all across Southern Ontario and our Tri County Carvers club was well represented.

Once again, I'm impressed James. I honestly don't know which one I like best. That canoe brings back fond memories of the Boundary Waters, so I'll go with that. You deserve all those ribbons.

My aim is to encourage others to practice an art form. Whether it be canoe building, wood carving, making furniture or some other craft, the rewards and personal satisfaction are enormous. I'm fortunate to be associated with a club with exceptional carvers that push each other to be better with each thing we do. There are three of us building folk instruments and we take pride in each other's development. The results just keep getting better.
I keep a carving made years ago as a reminder of things past. Sometimes the results are just plain ol' firewood but you won't see them here. Lol!

Building ukuleles!

At the young age of 68, I've started helping a local self-taught ukulele luthier. Here's my first one.
