Wow, some great shots everyone. Thanks for the tip on the state parks Tom. I want to get my boler soon and hopefully make it to the Rio Grande Birding festival one year. 92 lifers sound awesome.

I am a very beginning bird watcher and primarily watch the feeders from my window, and of course the beautiful birds at the shore. But I was not able to get my grandkids to have any interest until I got my iphone. There is an app called "ibird" which is free and the kids are fascinated. We watch for birds at the feeder and on walks, check the pictures on the iphone, hear the warble, check the locations, etc. and are able to identify the birds immediately. The free app does not have a lot of birds represented, but so far we have found the ones in our area. There are better apps for a small cost and I may upgrade soon. We can even take photos as soon as we spot something close enough. It is a good experience and it is getting so that they will call to tell me about a bird they have seen - they love woodpeckers, or as the little one says..peck wooders.

Hi Carole, That's a great way to get them to participate. I'll try it with my Niece and Nephew as I'm having the same trouble getting them active as well. The ibird app is the best out there and I own several bird apps. The paid versions go on sale for 50% off a few times a year (i.e. Christmas). $14.99 for full version or regional version for $5.99.

LOL Sorry, I meant to put their names in as I posted and got so excited that I figured out how to post pictures, I forgot to add the names.

The first is a 'rufus-sided towhee' and, of course, the second a 'Baltimore oriole'.

"Snowy" Year. Hello all you avian fanatics. I thought Id I give aheads up that it's starting to look like a Snowy Owl invasion year. Snowy Owls normally stay up in the Arctic where they blend in so nicely. However every several years the lemming population (there main food source) crashes and large numbers of Snowy Owls will fly as far as Southern California in search of food. Several have been spotted in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island in the last few days. Keep your eyes peeled.

If any of you should happen to find yourselves in Texas in the winter, some friends of ours, Les & Jane Hall lead birding tours at Goose Island state park near Rockport for a month and then, in March, move over To Lost Maples and do the same thing for 6 weeks to 2 months. Super people and they are very knowlegable.(sp?)
