We used to travel with our Standard Poodle and our Portuguese Water Dog and they would lay up on the beds so we had the floor space. They also slept in the back bed with me, while Joe slept on the side bed.
We now have two Miniature Poodles, both ex-show dogs and the boy was a stud dog. The boy will only go over an ex-pen to get to a female in season (is what we have been told). The girl, however, will go over an ex-pen and what we have done is use PVC at the top of the ex-pen and that keeps her in. Apparenly she was not flying over the pen but rather climbing or at the very least pulling herself on that top rail to get over after leaping. With the PVC on the top of all the bars, means that she cannot get a grip any longer to get up and over. We keep the ex-pen inside a dining fly just to make me feel a bit more secure, although they could easily get out of that since it has no bottom.

I do not use dog x-pens. I use a hard plastic Child's play pen met for outside. It is very sturdy and my Chi Chi and poodle stay in it without problems. If you dog is a digger that would be the only draw back since they can did under the pen. These pens come in all heights and sizes, You can buy extension pieces to make it as long as you want. If your dog is a climber, this is not a good solution for you.

Here is another photo for an idea for traveling with dogs when you have a 16' and no screen door. This allows you to open the door and step inside w/o the dog bolting the door and getting loose. We had this set up so it could be slid into place and removed easily. The dogs honored the gate, probably because they could see that if they jumped it, it would get them nowhere.

While I like the idea I know mine would not "honor" the gate. Especially the puppy. The moment the door starts to move that one tries to push the door open and barge through. We have had a few surprises and spent a fair amount of time with treats trying to get ahold of him.
Oh, and I wouldn't trust the screen door - probably just blow through it after a couple tries. We have to get something to reinforce the bottom of our screen door.
Jason.

The screen door on my not-a-FG-trailer has a built in 'track' where you can slip a piece of plexi into it. I put the plastic in there to contain my killer 10 pound dog.

Well we LOVE our dogs. We plan our vacations around them. Just recently went to Texas from N.C. for a wedding and our dogs cost $125.00 each, one way to carry on, $500.00 total. Teacup (Mimi is 2 1/2 yrs old and 5 1/2 lbs) and a Schnoodle (Buddy is 15 yrs old and 8 lbs). Talk about Sheesh! I won't do that again. Of course it would've cost that much to board them. I think my wife would probably board me first before the teacup. LOL. Oh, when talking about play-pens (which we use for the puppies), isn't it funny that now their referred to play-yards and not pens. Not allowed to put kids in a pen now, it has to be a play-yard.

I bought my camper specifically because the Air Force doesn't let me bring my dog on ATC (military) flights. I can't see flying with my dog on commercial flights either.
Being retired, I'd rather have my dog and travel by boat or with my camper. She loves being in the car and behaves herself while traveling.
I don't use any fencing. I do leash her at times. She needs off leash run around time. Fortunately she stays close most of the time. Portuguese Water Dogs are known for that.

I am very pleased with my dog. I trained her to close the door behind her when she comes in. For the last week, every time I met her out I might I left the door cracked. She pushes it open tentatively--she is a bit afraid if closing doors, opened it and walked around without any prompting, looks, or gestures from me closed it on her own.
Time to teach her something new.

I told my dog what you wrote, and she said, "I have trained my human to close the door".
Maybe you could work on some of the following with your dog :
