Metal detecting

How many of you are into the hobby, I bought my trailer to allow more time further away with the comfort of home.
At the moment I use many brands both for water and land hunting.

I bought a metal detector last winter but have not used it very much. I need to go find the family silver which was burried in a field behind my daughters home. The silver was suppose to have been burried during the Civil War when the union troops came to visit the farm. I have found the hidden compartments in the house where the guns were hidden but no guns. I looked for the silver years ago with a radio shack metal detector with no luck. Hopefully the new detector will do better.

Hi Eddie

Those Radio Shack detectors would only be good for about 4" inches.
I spend time hunting in the UK farm fields great finds to be had.
There are many relic hunters around who do well.

What machine did you buy?

Not that I need another Hobby but this one interests me. For those of you out there that have done it or have partners or friends that do it, what are some of the more interesting finds that you've seen?

I would love to do this but the good detectors are big bucks. We had a cheap one when the kids were little and had a blast finding fishing lures at the different lakes we camped at. Stocked several fixing tackle boxes for the youngsters!

Most machines can pay for themselves in a season or two.
The hammered silver on the bottom photo was my first trip to the UK, 1183 Henry . The first Diamond ring you see is an 18K one third diamond value 3000.00

Here's another shot of the better stuff. The chain and medallion are 14K and weigh 12 grams.
Here in Canada I usually pick up about 1500.00 dollars in change every season.

I have metal detected for a several years and is a great hobby. For starting out it is not good to buy the very best detector you can get, as it will have to many lights, bells, and whistles, just confusing you. Buy one that you can afford and buy it from a reputalbe dealer so you can get the right instructions. It is a very good hobby, rewarding and you never have to clean your catch.

My best find is not worth much, but took the most work and time. I was working the shoreline of a beach of a local lake and my detector showed a copper coin at 7 inches. I looked and scooped and nothing finally rock by rock, sand scoop, and handfuls I found a piesce of concrete about 3 inches in diamete with a reading of cooper. On shore I broke it open to find a 1957 lincoln cent, all this afer 4 hours of detecting.

Enjoy the dig andleave things better than you found them.

It's a relaxing hobby, plenty of fresh air a form of meditation with the focus on listening to the sounds.
I'm sure there are more than a few on this forum that enjoy the hobby.

With Loonies and Toonies that would be pretty easy and add pretty good too. A little harder here in the States detecting dollar bills.

I've always wanted to have a detector but I agree they are a little more than what I'd like to pay. Even the good ones with less bells and whistles are pricey.

I had a Tesoro Silver Sabre a few years ago. $200 was big money for me back then. I had a blast with it. I'm going to get another detector but don't really know which one. I need some recommendations. Probably in the $300 -$400 range.

The Tesoro line is still a great one to look at lifetime warranty.

There are many great deals on good lightly used machines on the detector forums.

Send a message via Yahoo to Darwin Maring
Fredericksburg Gold and Pawn 540-371-7800 have several used detectors in stock. They are checked out before they take them in to be sure they work. Give them a call - they ship.

Canadian Tire has some Bounty brand on sale for 50% off. Any idea if this is a good brand? I noticed the original price is inflated but the sale still seems good.

Bounty Hunter would be considered entry level, there are a few members on the Canadian Forum that use them with success.
Most dealers offer full packages on entry level at good prices.

While I'm not in this hobby (yet?), I do have a question. Many of the state parks and BLM lands in my area do not allow metal detectors. My question is: why? I can see a why if there is reason to believe that an area is near ancestral Indian land, but other than that ???

Some of these folks running the show forget who owns the land!

State Parks have rules that vary from park to park so contacting the one you want to detect for permission is the only way. Most do have set rules.
BLM land again varies from one state to the next some require a permit.

All historical sites have always been off limits including Indian land.
Contact a dealer in the area you live for information on the rules.
It is surprising that the odd brain dead person thinks they can do as they please without regard for the rules of ethical detecting and do cause problems for everyone.

There are plenty of city and town parks that are fair game.
