I used a bit of fill from an external flash (A Nikon SB800) with a "Better Beamer" attached. It gives you far more reach than the standard flash head when using long telephoto lenses. Although the blue jay was only about 20' away, I have managed to get light on a subject a couple of hundred feet away with it.

A few more travel pics. The boat was our view from a "quaint" private campground in Nova Scotia a few years ago. Mt Rundle was not from a camping trip (too far away and wrong season for us).

Okay, I am duly intimidated and very impressed by the great photos everyone is posting. I remind myself my little point and shoots do produce vividly colored pictures that make nice cards people actually buy (though I give more away!)

Brian M., and Brian V., and Roger H..........You all made recommendations to me about cameras, knowing my attachment to my Zeiss Lens on my funky little Sony. Even my better made Cannon does not take as good of pictures. I'm really ready to get something that will take better shots in more situations (the Sony is best at close-ups), but I am 'lazy' and do not want to learn a lot of tech stuff - I can never retain what the manuals say. It's the art of composing & shooting, being able to shoot nature quickly when an opportunity arises, and sharing photos in various ways that I enjoy about photography. Not equipment gismos!

I'm overwhelmed looking at the possibilities and the info rarely gives 'ease of use' info. So what is the most affordable (for the unemployed), with a good quality lens (for the picky), and easy to learn (for the lazy - or maybe dumb), light weight camera - or am I asking too much of one camera?

I realize I will get more than one answer here........

How muc money are you will to spend?
How much time are you willing to put into learning?
Please note that the learning is important. If you cannot hold a camra still or know how to fram or set it, your pictures will lack in quality. A lot of good books on this with different approaces, The main thing is practice, practice and practice every part.

I understand a lot about photography, (holding camera still, use tripod sometimes, framing, light, lighting, etc.) and I practice ALL the time - never without a camera in my pocket. I'm going to take a photo & writing workshop this summer to improve two areas of my life and would like to go with a better camera.

What do I want it to do? I think I said - take quick shots without a lot of settings. I like the automatic settings of my small Sony and Cannon, but neither are good for landscapes, mostly good for close-ups.

I guess I'm looking for a camera that has automatic options and easy to understand manual settings - perhaps that is two different cameras. I liked my Olympus 35 mm and guess I am still looking for the right digital match for me.

Hi Penney,

There are plenty of good cameras out there that will do what you want, in your price range. The Canon G10 is no longer made, it's now a Canon G11. It's a very good camera for about $450.

The Panasonic Lumix is also a good camera with a Leica lens. It's priced under $400.

May I also suggest visiting a local store like Glazer's in Seattle. There you can ask questions from knowledgeable people and actually hold the cameras in your hands.

Whatever you decide, I wish you continued success in your photography adventures!

The 35 mm cameras weight is about 4 pounds and the refurbished can be found for under $ 400 kit. I used the Nikon D-40 for about 15000 pics. Adaroma.com has refurbished of all makes. Try to get one with enough features to keep you busy.

.......still in 'sticker shock', can't believe I bought it, still fumbling around trying to learn how to get the best shots from it, so far close-ups, the type I use for my cards, not printing true to colors I see on computer, but there's lots of settings to learn.......

The optic view finder and ability to shoot in RAW format were deciding factors in choosing this camera. On this trip to the coast with my 89 yr. old Mom I handed her my little Canon Elph and a late life photographer was born.....like Grandma Moses!

Hi Penney! Color management can be pretty confusing. Just make sure you set your camera, workspace on your monitor, and color printer all to the same color space. In other words camera to sRGB, then work in sRGB in Photoshop, and make sure your printer isn't changing/managing the color space from there. Good luck!

Congrats Penney! I have a G-5 that has gone to Costa Rica and Australia with me... and I still love the little guy! The articulated screen is really a useful feature! You'll have a good time with the G11. I (briefly) considered picking one up too... but I think I need to stay in the 4/3rds system for anything else I buy... that was why I picked up the e-520 for my new "P & S".

yeah and make sure your computer monitor is set for millions of colors and not 16 bit or 256 colors. I have a color calibrated monitor at work, I use it to because I'm involved in commercial printing and the colors need to absolutely, positively match CMYK or Pantone. You don't even want to know what that monitor cost.
