Glad you liked the silhouette of Monument Valley. I took it from the campground standing about 20 feet from my camper. Best part is, the colors are true as seen. Amazing place.

Thanks Brian,
Funny thing is I was the only person photographing the sunrise. Looked back at the campground and I could see TV's turned on in some of the campers. They sure missed the moment. LOL

Sometimes the beauty of nature is stunning in its simplicity. These mallard ducks were swimming near where we live...

Brian,
You're so right about the beauty in simplicity. Nature is a thing of beauty.
This kestrel was focused on a field mouse and allowed me to get this image. Simple image. Beautiful subject.

It's exciting to see all the camper-photographer talent here. These are some lovely images.

I enjoy shooting a bunch of different stuff, but mostly do wildlife, livestock, and trains. There's something about trains I really enjoy. Just a couple of samples here.

A whitetail fawn in valley forge national park just last week

a tricolored heron in Viera, florida

Limousin heifers in het zwin, flanders

And one of my favorite train images, a NJ Transit train arriving at 30th street station in philadelphia

I have a whole collection of photos I've taken of my scooter in all the places I've ridden it to, and I'm REALLY looking forward to getting my mitts on the Burro to start documenting its new adventures.

Great photos Jen. Do you mind me asking what lens you were using for the deer and the bird shot?

Thanks, Carol! I did that one with a Nikon D300 and the lens is Nikon's 300mm autofocus f/4.

Snow pics

I am always so impressed by the talent here, and the beauty from around the country! It's armchair scenic traveling!

Jen I love your cows! And the heron is exquisite. Jon your picture captures the wind & the moment so well. I looked at many of your other pictures, especially your National Parks! Wow! You've been to nearly all of them!

Some tips on photographing snow?? I've managed a few good ones over the years, good enough to print, and every year I try for more, but I find there is a graininess to many of my snow pictures. Probably a product of my camera, but wondering if there's something else I could learn to do.

(We just had our first snow, 8" & 13 degrees, for the Pacific Coast it was a very cold & early snow! So snow is on my mind. Some of these pictures are from previous years, my favorite is the snow on ferns I took this week, the Pacific NW can't claim records in depth & days of snow, but snow on giant ferns is quintessential NW!)

Penney, thanks! Snow is tricky because it's usually standing next to something very dark, a tree trunk or a fence post or whatever, and when the camera calculates an average exposure, sometimes the whites lose out and get sort of all blown out and overexposed.

Not sure what camera you have, but I know many of the DSLR Nikons will tend towards blown out whites without some help from the exposure compensation controls. (I'm not familiar with other brands, no idea how they handle bright-white stuff.) When I have light and dark extremes in a shot, say with a black and white cow, I will dial the exposure compensation into a negative range to tell the camera not to expose the white bits quite so much. That allows more detail in those parts in your image.

As for graininess, I can't really tell in those smaller images. Do you have the ISO jacked up pretty high maybe? A lower ISO and a tripod or monopod to compensate for slowed shutter speeds might help if that's the case.
