Hey all. A few weeks about I bought my very first fibreglass trailer project. I have never tackled a trailer before, but I have built two campervans from start to finish and also have done a bit of a campervan reno for someone so I am excited to try my hand at the Bigfoot! I was in need of a new truck, and after spending north of $50k on that, I didn't really want to buy another van for the same amount or more so I decided on a project fibreglass trailer instead. I love the idea of being able to drop the trailer at the campsite and then explore in the truck. Anyway, on the the plan.
The interior ceiling was reinforced by a cabinet maker and is solid. The exterior roof is "monsoon" proof according to the seller. Those two things out of the way, I can focus on the rest.
The plan: remove and rebuild most of the interior with the exception of the upper cabinets. Redo all plumbing and
electrical. Remove and go away from
propane appliances with the exception of the stove top which I will adapt down to be able to use the small camping type bottles. The rest will run off a 300AH LiPO4
battery including a 12v compressor
fridge. I will be installing
solar on the roof and an inverter/charger to be able to both charge from shore power and also power my 120v needs like the receptacles and water heater. I installed these systems in the two campervans I build and they work very well. I did a three week trip in mine powering the 12v
fridge and
lights, etc, and without plugging in to shore power once, my batteries never got below 80%.
I will need to patch up some vent holes in the side since I don't need them without
propane appliances so I will have to learn how to "fibreglass" which I am looking forward to. I want to replace the wood subfloor so getting down to that is job 1.
I have already learned a great deal from this forum and look forward to learning much more as I go!
