Does anyone know where I can purchase a gas control valve for my Atwood Water Heater? The part no. is 91602.

Just search Atwood 91602 and you will find several that "claim" to have them, I found a wide price range. If you have a local RV dealer, that may be best.

No luck with local RV dealers. Found it listed at several online dealers but when I go to order, it is out of stock. Contacted an online RV support site called "JustAnswer" and started a chat. The rep took a 30 minute break and when he got back to me sent a link to a company called "RivalCookies" that claimed to have a number of them in stock. I ordered over a week ago and it was to be shipped in 3 to 5 days. I've checked the order regularly and it still has not shipped. I'm suspicious. RivalCookies sells sunglasses and looks like it located in China. I will dispute the charge if it does not ship by tomorrow.

Well have you thought of replacing the whole thing. To often I have done not cheap repairs on an old thing they had to do another and another and finally had to replace the whole thing.

Now I had to replace my water heater because if froze. The drain valve failed and I did not realize it and thought it had drained. But when I did I found that I really should have already replaced it and that it was causing problems. It had worn through on the bottom and apparently had been leaking like for a year or more and I had to do a lot of additional repairs because of this.

So if nothing else I would look real carefully around it probably with a bore scope to find out if the unit is still OK before trying to do a repair like replacing the valve.

There was a used and new parts dealer just north of Denver Colorado that had a lot of odd stuff. Try googling it. I don't remember the name of it.

Thanks. Yes, have thought about replacing the unit. Not sure I want to tackle this myself. Apparently, there is not a direct replacement available. I would also need to replace the door and I don't know what other modifications would be required. Local RV dealer quoted over $1K. Amazon is now listing the gas valve at about $400! Most similar valves list around $100

[QUOTE=Jann Todd;874646]We replaced a water heater in a 1985 Casita that had a 3 gallon heater once. We had to cut out the wall a little to make it fit. We carefully cut it with a hacksaw very slowly. Didn't take that long though. The worst part was getting the propane tube to bend to the new heater since it was a 6 gallon one. We had no knowledge of how to do any of it just some common sense and it went in fine. Just think ahead and go slow. Looking at each step as you go. There should be instructions on how to install one with it in the box. We went from a propane only to a propane/electric one. So that added to the fun. But a diy can do the job. The water heater door should be on the new one as it is a unit. Or at least used to be.

Not sure what you mean by replacing the door. if you are talking about the service door you drop to light it, that usually comes with the new water heater. Replacing mine was a yes all day job. And yes I am pretty handy. And a couple part really required me to go into the house and tell my housemate to put her shoes on. ;-) The plumbing changed a bit and took a couple of parts. But not a lot.

OK my job actually took about four days. But that was a bit over an hour removing the old on. Two plus days repairing the water damage from the fact it actually had been leaking for over a year. Then about 4 hours to put the new one in. And about another like an hour sealing things up and testing. And I had a couple extra drying days in the repair where I just had to let it sit but did not have to work on it. BUT

without the damage I am pretty sure I could have replaced it in a single day.

If you want to know what to look for for what happened to me. Look right at the bottom of the tank. Probably going to need a borescope. But what had happened is the tank had been moving just a little little bit over like a couple decades and it had worn through and was leaking. And there was water damage coming out of both sides right at the bottom of the tank to the front and back of the camper right over top of the wheel system.

The water heater had been placed directly on the wood. I put it on a piece of inner tube. Not because of the water but so that that way when it vibrated it wouldn't actually wear.

I also have a much better drain valve so that he can't plug

Thank you. I don't know why this particular valve is now so expensive.

Also how do you know the battle is bad? I have an intermittent problem mine that I think a lot of people do. The jet for the pilot light is really really small. And plugs up a lot. And as a safety measure if the line from the pilot light cannot pass gas. Clean out the 1/64th of an inch diameter little hole on the pilot light and the world starts working again
