Question 2015 Ford Edge Sport (2.7L) towing.

Hi, I'm Terry, new member, wanting to tap into your experience towing small trailers like the Casita 17' Spirit Deluxe, about 2500 lb. Has anyone used a 2015-2018 Ford Edge Sport (has the 2.7 V6) as a tow vehicle for trailers of this general size/weight? I would welcome your experiences, positive or negative.
I'm installing a Draw-Tite 75234 Class III hitch on a 2015 Ford Edge Sport.
Thanks

I think you will be over the safe tow weight.

Casita 17 will weigh quite a bit more than your estimate. Check out weights in the real world. What is your estimate based on? If it is "I saw it on the web" or "someone told me" be very wary. If it is a seller, ask them to get it weighed on a certified scale. Make sure its the full trailer weight, not just the trailer's axle. A certified weight can be purchased at any truck stop for about $10.

Casita will weigh around 3,000 pounds, Edge tow rating is 2,000 pounds. I would not base exceeding your rating by 50% based on what someone might post on the internet.

And FWIW, in the world of molded FG trailers, a Casita 17 is one of the bigger ones. When people are seeking really light weight, they are more likely in the 13 foot class.

Not only over weight limit, but over tongue weight limit, which is pretty heavy at around 450 lbs on a SD 17 ft Casita, and over the limit on payload once loaded for camping. For a 17 ft Casita its best to get a mid size truck to a full size truck rated to tow 6500 lbs then you got some margin for safety, but even then payload could be too low in the vehicle on some mid size trucks. Why mfgrs build trucks with marginal payload is beyond me, if they have tow rating of 6500 but 1200 or less payload it would be easy to overload for camping trips.

I'm pretty sure the Casita 17s are around 2500 empty and max out at 3500. At least that's what mine is. So, plan accordingly cuz it's no fun towing at max capacity.

I had an Edge Sport but I sold it because I didn’t feel the tow capacity would be appropriate, and retrofitting a tow hitch to that vehicle would be somewhat problematic. So I ended up getting another vehicle with a decent tow capacity.
