I wouldn't be concerned about the weight of a canoe on the trailer as they're a whole lot lighter than a human being and a distributed load. I'm pondering how the heck to get one up there, particularly with an A/C and vents along the centerline. I put a boat roller on the rear of my pickup camper and it was still a challenge to roll a 17 ft canoe on top, then tie it down on one side of a flat roof and lash it down to wide Yakima rails.

The weight wouldn't be the problem, but now that I think about it, it's how tightly you'd have to tie it down. This would force the canoe downward and might deform the Trillium's shell under the blocks (which would loosen the straps or ropes while traveling). Not so good.

Hmm, what about welding a rack overtop the roof? Support the rack with vertical pieces welded to the A frame and the bumper. Canoe would not touch the shell at all. Seems like I saw a picture one time of someone's trailer where they'd done this.... must've been close to 10 years ago, no idea who.

A Uhaul camper owner built a rack system that attaches to the trailer frame and goes over the roof to carry two kayaks. Almost looks like a roll cage on the trailer. They did a nice job, but looks like a lot of lifting to get the kayaks up there. As for the comment about a rear bike rack damaging the bumper, if you're going to carry bikes on the rear you have to build a good receiver hitch that goes under the trailer and attaches to a couple frame crossmembers, not just the bumper, and use a rack that is rated for use on a RV. Plenty of threads here about rear bike racks, and the pros and cons of using one.

Excellent point! This retired mechanical engineer definitely agrees.

If you carry it on the trailer, at some point I would become worried about clearing overpasses, etc. Just thinking...

I've seen at least two trailers that had a "hitch" with a bike mount. Just make sure the hitch is bolted/welded to something stout enough.

I also saw a guy who had two bikes mounted on the tongue of his Airstream, but he was dragging it with a F350 so weight on the tongue probably wasn't an issue.

I went to my local metal yard today and was able to pick up this beautiful 2”x2”x120” piece of hollowed stainless steel. Used my angle grinder to cut it into two 60” cross bars. Drilled holes spaced evenly to fit over my stock rails and secured with 2” u-bolts. It is solid as a rock and will have more than enough room for all my toys.
Metal yard purchase: $21
Hardware + drill bit: $34

All said and done I’ve got a solid roof rack for $55

Thanks again for all the help! I’m confident in my choice and so relieved that I will not have to worry the entire time we’re on the road that I am causing damage to our trailer. Fringe benefit, I don’t have to carry our boat to the launch.

long as you're not over 12' tall, you're good almost everywhere.

I've got a bike rack on the hitch reciever thats on the back of my Escape 21. reciever says "Max load 150 lbs", my bikes weigh maybe 50-55 lbs combined, and the RV rated Swagman Escapee2 rack weighs maybe 30 lbs, so we're well under that. not worried about the tongue weight at all, but I'm towing with an F250 diesel longbed...

I like it!
Do you have a total height? My canoe would probably be under the 9' on the trailer, but I'd probably forget the extra height at just the wrong time.

The canoe is lower than the trailer, I can actually drive it into the garage with at least 4” clearance. As for the bikes I’m not sure. I’m not driving anywhere a semi wouldn’t so I think I’ll be safe.
