Hello from Dallas!

We just bought our first fiberglass trailer: a 1989 Scamp 16'. We have a teardrop camper that we love, but our family has grown and we're excited to move on to something a little bigger.

Our Scamp is in overall good condition, but we definitely need to do some updates and fixes. I guess we're kind of at a loss for where to start. Scamp is intact, but window seals are going bad, escape hatch and fan probably need to be replaced. There are small signs of minor leaks from the roof openings I'm assuming.

The previous owner never had batteries or propane hooked up and never used water tanks.

Any suggestions on where to begin? Replace windows, and seal the outside? Test electrical and propane and get water working?

Any advice on direction would be much appreciated!

Congratulations on your new (to you) Scamp! You have come to the right place if you need information and advice. I have none for you, but someone will be chiming in soon. Just wanted to say WELCOME!

Hi Ryan. Welcome. My suggestion is that you start with the items that could be safety issues.

Safety plus weather proof: window seals, vents, etc. Leaks can reek havoc on a FG trailer if not taken care of promptly. 30 year old trailer, its time to properly reseal windows and vents.

On safety, road safety first: tires, wheel bearings, brakes, lights. You can leave propane and electrical systems shut off until you test them fully. I'd put electrical ahead of propane. Its what I have done on my 1977 Trillium.

The mistake most people make, INCLUDING ME, is to put cosmetics ahead of these items. In my case, cleaning and waxing the outside of my trailer should have been done AFTER window seals and belly band repair. I jumped the gun for sure.

Thanks for the insight! My wife and I were just debating exterior cosmetics over things like sealing, so thank you for your input Bill!

Do you still have your Scamp??

We are up in McKinney and are super interested in getting a fiberglass camper but we have not seen the inside of a 16’ camper. We just visited a Uhaul 13 yesterday in Garland but it’s pretty tight for our family of 3.
