Hello from Portland, OR!

Hello!

Just picked up a 2018 Scamp 13’, Layout 1 and I’m excited to get out there! Unfortunately, I still need to get a hitch on my RAV4 Prime so it’s going to be a little while. Scamp is in pretty good shape, mostly just need a little cleaning but I’m also going to replace the tires and repack the wheel bearings. I plan boondocking most of the time when I take it out.

Couple things I noticed that I’m wondering if are concerning (pics here)
  • There is some rust on the frame but I don’t think it’s worrisome in it’s current state - certainly hope not. I attached some pictures. Should I be doing anything about it? Would a cleaning & preventive coating be more trouble than its worth?
  • The sink drain line looks pretty nasty - supposedly wasn’t used but someone must have dumped something in the sink at some point.
Planned upgrades
  • Lithium battery - already have a nice one but will need to upgrade the charge converter
  • More lighting/decor
  • New curtains
Might add
  • Solar
  • A/C
  • Water heater + pump (not sure how energy intensive these are or the difficulty to install)
  • Additional storage - I’m wondering about attaching shelving to walls and potentially making additional cuts into the plastic molding to make another cabinet on the column to the left of the entrance.
Cheers!

Welcome from another Scamp 13-1 owner! We’ve loved our 2008 for over 12 years now.

Ours also has light surface rust on the frame, pretty typical. I touch up the tongue and bumper every few years for appearance, but I haven’t done anything to the underside. Because our climate is so dry and we have garage storage, it doesn't seem to be progressing much. In a wet and humid climate like yours, it might be worth taking some action, but I don't think it's urgent. POR15 is the product many use. It’s an unpleasant and messy job.

I also replaced the gravel guard hardware with a new set from Scamp. Ours was not only rusty but also worn to the point the latches were loose. Not sure, but I think it's the same hardware used for old-style wooden screen windows, so you might be able to find it at a local hardware store.

Cutting another door in the closet by the door is a common mod. Just stay away from the corners and the wood stiffeners that are fiberglassed to the inside. That closet is structural and helps support the roof and maintain proper curvature of the door opening. Does yours have the big bed option?

2018 was the first year for the black door hinges. Early builds were cast aluminum and prone to fracture, leading to numerous doors separating from the body (a few fell off under tow). The upper hinge usually fails first. The solution was to switch to stamped steel hinges. Many have already been changed, but check yours with a magnet. If they’re aluminum, contact Scamp regarding steel replacements. I hope they’re still stocking them. They discontinued those hinges on new builds in 2021 with the door redesign.

Best wishes with your projects. Happy camping!

Thanks, Jon!

I'll look into the gravel guard and door hinges. It is the big bed ...useful cause I'm 5'11"!

That also explains what you meant by the "column" by the door... In my small-bed configuration, it's a whole closet!

Welcome and congrats. We have a Casita and live in very rainy country...we get some surface rust as well....every couple years...I brush with a wire brush and hit it with a good spray paint....seems to work...looks great. Our trailer is a 2011. Good luck...have fun.
