I've only just started hunting for a nice little
fiberglass egg over here in Sunny San Jose, to use as a sort of staging area for developing a small homestead wherever I can manage to find some land in a place I end up deciding I like!
I'm going to be towing the beast with my new Jetta TDI Sportwagen, which should be able to handle what I'm intending to throw at it, but at this point it seems like I'm limited by my tow caps/tongue weight!
The tongue limit on my hitch (Westfalia 2" ball hitch) and car is 220lbs, and the tow limit is something near 3500 pounds, overseas. While the limits over here are different, I have seen folks hauling some rather substantial loads with no issues on these hitches and cars, so I'm not concerned, given the ideas I've had thus far.
That said, I'm going to be looking at a 16 foot option, and at this point the
Scamp seems like the best option for my limited tow cap, since most of the others seem pretty hefty on the tongue and tow limits. The
Casita is only 5 pounds under tongue, compared to the
Scamp that comes in at 165, or 55 pounds under tongue. Pretty substantially different!
Anyway, I'm putting the hitch on today, and I'm forming plans on either rebuilding an old
scamp to be exactly what I want and saving up a bunch of cash, so if I don't find anything sooner rather than later, I'll use said cash to buy up a new-er model that is closer to what I was thinking.
The only requisites I've nailed down so far are:
- Bathroom/Shower, decently sized
- Electric
brakes
Everything else is either negotiable, or I'm happy to add it myself, as I'll be basically doing everything up as efficiently as I can manage (Solar to charge the batteries, possibly using lighter-weight cells to reduce tongue
weight further, etc... DC LED
lighting in the cabin, and so on and so forth.)
Anyway, if you've any recommendations, ideas or commentary for someone just getting into the scene, please let me know! I'm always happy to hear stories, warnings or what-have-you. =)
Here's the tow vehicle... Should look more or less like a parade of eggs I figure!
