Hi All

I'm martin. We got a 1983 Scamp 16 several months ago. Have taken it on a few fun camping trips already, but have lots of work to do on it as well. Excited to learn throughout the process.

Welcome! Congrats on joining the Scamp family.

One of the first things I’d check on an older 16’er is the frame. Pay special attention to the front where it transitions to the tongue. If it’s going to break, that’s usually where it happens. You might have to clean surface rust to look for cracks hiding underneath. It can be repaired or reinforced if needed.

Congratulations on the new-to-you trailer!

Checking the tires and evaluating the torsion axles are two other items to check into.

The rubber inside the torsion axles degrades over the years and can leave the suspension more or less "bottomed out".

Tires also age out over time, so you might check the date codes.

The site has a pretty good search function, so you should be able to pull up some of the many previous posts on these subjects once you get the hang of it.

At some point in its life, it was converted to a leaf spring suspension so it no longer has the torsion axle setup & actually sits quite high.
