Hi from Indiana

Just want to say Hi. We are Tom & Sue from Northern Indiana. We are thinking of moving to our winter home in Florida and getting a camper to come north in the summer. We live near Elkhart In.,so we will be looking at a lot of small campers before we make up our mind. Economy of travel is a consideration for us and we will be wanting to know what folks are using to tow their 13' to 17' campers with as well as the MPG they are getting. We have looked at a few trailers that are more or less permanently located in camp grounds near us here in Indiana, but we are thinking that we would like to move from place to place for a few years while we still can.

Normal coastal trips 21.5mpg towing a 16' Scamp with side bath with Subaru 4 cyl Outback. Only got 19.5 mpg on a recent 3000 mile trip but I did a number of *large* mountain passes and spent a good deal of time over 8000'.

Honda CRV

We tow a Scamp 16 with side bath or equivalent for about 7 months a year. Fully loaded for our extended travels the Scamp weighs about 2400 pounds. We've averaged about 23 mpg towing the Scamp and a similarly sized but heavier Casita 16 with front bath,

We tow with a 2004, 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission Honda CRV. It now has 150,000 miles on it. Typically we are towing in 5th at about 57 mph. We do not use a Weight Distribtion hitch.

Elkhart isn't all that far from Grandville, MI where the Egg Camper factory is located. You could take a run up there and see if one of those would work for you. Check out eggcamperrv.com. They have a bit more headroom and a bit more elbow room than some of the others. We have one that we're towing with a Chevy Silverado 1500 (5.3 liter and 4 speed automatic) We're in western Wyoming right now with well over 3000 miles behind us. We took the Chevy because the seats are miles better than the seats in the Chrysler. right now. We're getting from 11-15+ mpg depending on headwinds and mountains. We also tow it with our Chrysler minivan ( 3.8 liter engine and 6 speed automatic).

Hi Tom and Sue, welcome to FiberglassRV. What I tow with and the mileage I get probably would be meaningless to you since we drive in different areas of the country and load our trailers differently. I hope you find a lot of good information here on FiberglassRV, and I'll know you'll find friendly people

I'm a truck guy so first choice is always a Toyota truck, then a Nissan truck both would do the trick, if you prefer an SUV again a Toyota or Nissan will do the job. Whatever you decide to tow with I would avoid a bigger vehicle with a V-8 because you just don't need it.
