The kid factor is a big part of why we're looking at an SUV or van rather than a truck. Our daughter is still in a car seat, which significantly limits options when it comes to trucks (it would almost definitely need a crew cab, for example).

Hi and welcome. We have always used our chrysler mini vans for towing- pasenger space plus room to put those extras- chairs, screen room, dirty laundry, etc. While we may not have the super power for steep/high altitude (mountain) travel at full speed, it suits our little 73 Trillium just fine!

With five kids a truck was never an option for family travel, though I drive a Ranger to work. The van we use is a 1996 GMC Savana travel van with four non swiveling captains chairs and a rear bench that converts to a bed. Both trailer and van are used for sleeping.

I'm honestly becoming more and more convinced that a minivan is the way to go. They're awesome for camping! My wife, on the other hand, is adamantly against a minivan (although we came pretty close to buying one last week, since a friend of a friend was selling one with a tow package for a very good price; someone else got to it before we did, though).

We went through the same thing. I like minivans (and so do the kids), but when time came to replace our aging Sienna, my wife vetoed another minivan. We ended up with a Pilot. It has a few advantages, like more clearance for campground roads and standard trailer wiring, but has a higher cost of ownership.
