Just getting back into trailering

We have been reading this forum for months and are excited to finally get back into the life of trailering. We are retired Army and then retired from 18 years in teaching. I taught first grade and George taught high school science. We own a small ranch in Central Texas. Had horses and did playday activities with them and our boys for years. Had a 16 ft Cardinal that we used a lot on the Russian River in CA.
Just ordered a new Casita Liberty Deluxe 17 and should get it in late Nov. We have spotted several Casitas in campgrounds lately and are looking forward to meeting you around the campfire when Texas gets enough rain to allow campfires again.

We have been watching posts and pics of rallies. Looking forward to those next year. The good part of being retired is that we can go to rallies anywhere in the country "just for fun". For years we were here because of the animals or we pulled the horses to shows. Now we can go whenever and wherever! YEA!

Thanks to all three of you for the welcome. I looked up Quartzsite and that would be an easy pull as my sister is in AZ and we have been wanting to go west. I just put over 7000 miles on the truck going east,north,south,north and lastly back to TX.(Picking up grandkids.) It is just nice to have a place to go for information, suggestions,tall tales, and encouragement.

Welcome to FGRV and congratulations on your new Casita. I'm sure you will have many happy times in it. Definitely check out the Quartzsite rally in February. It's a great boondocking experience. Last February there were 62 rigs there.

I am a military retiree (Air Force) who also had a second career in education (at the post-secondary level). Retired last year but don't think it took very well as I'm now on contract working a research project for the school.

Break your new Casita in right. Bring it to Quartzsite.

So far I have not been bitten to return to the classroom. George retired two years ago and we bought a HUD home and took it down to the studs and when we were done it rented in two hours. That kept him busy till March. I am looking forward to getting the trailer and getting out on the road. What special things do we need to "boondock" for that length of time? Generator? Sounds like everyone had a great time in the postings we read. We are game but need more info to prepare. Sandy

Some use a generator, some just use a solar panel to recharge the battery. If you want to run a microwave or AC off-grid you'll probably want the genny, otherwise you could probably get by with solar. There have been some good threads here on the subject.

A lot depends on what you expect to be using while you are boondocking. The more you operate on 12 volts and propane, the less you'll need a generator. I find that January and February in Quartzsite doesn't require Air Conditioning, but that's me; YMMV. Change your interior lights to LED bulbs and you'll save significant battery life. Of course, run the refrigerator and water heater on propane. I have 45 watts of solar panels that keep up with my battery draw for lights, water pump, and furnace blower motor.

Thanks for the information. Now George and I are reading all the posts for LED lights and solar panels. That seems to be the cheaper way to get into this type of camping. I really like all of the information and encouragement found on this forum. Thanks, Sandy

We have only electric heat, ergo, no heat at Quarzsite this last Feb and when we woke up, it was 42 degrees in Homelet. Of course, during the day, it is comfortable.
