My 1991 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Global Galaxy 2.8l diesel camper

Here she is! Fresh off the boat from Japan. 1991 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Global Galaxy RV. 2.8l RHD diesel with 76,000 miles. 15" dually in the rear with the weird 5 lug to 6 lug inner wheel I believe. Let me know what you guys think, or any info you may know about this camper. Not finding a ton of info about these models on the web. It looks similar to a sunrader but different manufacturer I'm guessing.

Welcome, Billy!

That's a very unique camper you've got. Thanks for sharing.

On this forum we are mainly about towables, so I don't know if there'll be a lot of technical help, but plenty of interest. We recently lost one of our most knowledgable members about Toyota motorhomes in general and Sunraders in particular. I'm missing his insights about now! I think there is a forum just for Toyota motorhomes- that would be the place for technical issues with the chassis and drivetrain.

But I hope you'll stay active here, too. I think most of us look on compact, molded fiberglass motorhomes as close kin. And like Dave, I'd love to see what the inside looks like.

WOW !!! If I say one of those for sale locally I'd scoop it up In a New York Minute !!!

How did you find it ?

Good luck with it...it took courage to go through the process of an international purchase.

Happy Camping !

That is very interesting. What are your plans for the right-hand drive rig?

Other than finding parts or someone who can work on that engine, that is one really, really cool RV.

I'm actually curious how the diesel engine gets a pass for importation and registration in the States.

For a brief and fun-filled time in the 80's a mission I was involved with owned a Toyota bus with a 4-cylinder diesel engine mounted under the center floor and powering the rear(?) wheels via a 4 speed column-mounted manual transmission. It was obviously meant for a low-speed, low altitude urban environment, so it was a slug in our hilly, high altitude location. But it was fun to play with. Until it broke.

I never heard how it got here.

Deb

That was the one. They shipped it in from Japan. I'm in the process of revamping the interior, new flooring, countertop, gas cooktop, sink, upholstery, and so on. I'll post some new pics soon!

There is a 25 year law on titling imported vehicles in the US. This being a 91, 2016 is the first year it will be allowed to be rigistered and plated in the US.

Very nice. Was it made by Toyota?

When I was in college there was a fellow with an imported MGA with right hand wheel. Being a passenger was quite the ride. Raz
