New Amerigo Owner

Hello all.

My name is Bryan, from Ionia, MI. I just purchase a 1972 Amerigo FG-16. It needs complete restoration. It has "good bones", but a few of them are slightly fractured right now. I plan to gut the interior, and replace it with everything new. If any of you have done something similar on an Amerigo and have any advice or direction, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in adavance.

Hi Bryan,

Welcome to fiberglassrv. I can't think of an Amerigo that was gutted off the top of my head here, although I am sure that there are some here if you search. There are some descriptions of other kinds that might be useful. One that comes to mind is Ken's complete redo of his Bigfoot that he cut in half to make longer - http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...oot-44623.html.

The Amerigo's seem to be similar in shape to Trilliums too. So maybe some ideas can be had from Trillium restorations. Welcome to the group, Bryan, from another Michiganian.

You may have already checked it out. I didn't see a complete remodel but lots of pics and ideas. I also recall reading (rumour?) that the Square Boler used the Amerigo mold.

We just bought and towed ours home yesterday. It is also a 1973 FG-16. Looks like we'll be totally redoing her. We'll be going through this process in Illinois while you are going through it in Michigan so we can probably help each other. Right now we are in the process of pulling out all the rotten wood. So far, all our fiberglass looks great. I am thinking ahead to what to do once we are ready to build her back up. Plans are, of course, in flux. We don't really know yet whether we have to replace the floor. It feels solid everywhere. We learn more as we pull out material but I'm thinking about trying to obtain the flooring material they use at Livin Lite (Quicksilver All Aluminum Ultra Light Campers, Ultralight Campers, Lightweight Campers, Ultra-Lightweight Campers) or something like it to do the floor. It is tongue-and-groove aluminum flooring. Wherever I can, I'd like to replace the materials that I take out with something lighter. I think the aluminum floor will be about half the weight of a wood floor. More later. What point are you at in the process?

I live in Menominee,Mi and am almost done getting the floor out. Everything else is removed. I'd sure like to see what you came up with for a floor plan. I removed the closet and opened it all up. I haven't decided what to do yet but storage will be a factor. While I'm not putting the original appliances back in I do have them in my basement and intend to keep them if I decide to sell it at some point. Look forward to seeing pictures

So glad to see other Amerigo posts! I just bought a 74 FG-16 in pretty good shape but plan on doing some work. The floor is a little soft rightby the door but covered with carpet so will need to investigate. The biggest mystery is the awning and how to use the poles it came with--seems to be all there, just don't have a picture or any instructions. Any ideas?

Cathy, Welcome, Congrat's on your purchase as well. You might want to start a whole new post, with pic's of the awning poles so that other's might see your question and hopefully be able to help you. Your question might get lost in Bryans post. Good Luck!

Bryan. Stumped on that awing also. The floor was soft by the door when i bought mine and after pulling up the vinyl found the wood saturated and crumbling. So new floors . If you find out about the awing please pass along. My local glass installer is putting new plexi-glass in the windows for me and replacing the screen. Quite a process removing them though.
