Hi all!
My husband and are interested in buying a used trailer. It needs to be small, such as a scamp or burro etc. Needs to be pulled with a Subaru outback. We are pretty handy and don't mind doing some fixing up. The problem is.. we are hoping to keep the initial cost around $2000 or less. Do you think we can find something in that price range? I'm noticing that there aren't many of these adorable trailers available in the Northeast, but we don't mind traveling a bit to pick it up. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Soooo psyched to have found this site...thanks to all! Nancy Lucier

Welcome to the site.

If you think they are rare in the North East you should experience the dearth in Florida!

It took me a while to find ours after continuously checking everywhere I could think of; here, eBay, craigslist, RV dealers etc.

Finally found basically a rolling shell on www.theSamba.com -- the VW site -- for $550.

Good luck.

Keep looking. We got ours from E-bay. It was about an hour and a half south east of you in MA.
Why is it that they are never where you are?

Thumbs down

Nancy there are some out there. I bought mine in Southbridge, MA just a few months ago. I found it on craigslist, and have seen others. But you have to be diligent, I see one pop up and its gone the next day. When I bought mine I was told I was the first reply but they pulled the add a few hours later after three hundred replies. Be prepared to do work on the frame and floor but fiberglass is alsmost for ever.

Good luck and happy shopping...

Move fast when you find one... and in that price range, unless it's in need of some work, you're not going to need to bother haggling. After missing out on, literally, a dozen units over a years time... I found one on craigslist in Grand Rapids, MI.

Here's how it played out in my instance...

Saturday
~2pm .. found 1976, 13' Scamp in Grand Rapids on Craigslist, small photos look promising
2:02pm.. talked to owner, says nothing seriously wrong with it. I tell her "I'll take it, but you have to promise me you won't sell it between now and the time I get there after driving over 600 miles to get it!!". Owner agrees, "It's yours."
2:15pm.. hitch hooked up, change of clothes packed, leaving home in our Honda Element, which has patiently been waiting to pull a 13 footer for a year now.
2:30pm.. stop at bank, withdraw $2,000 (a coincidence, eh? ours turned out to be a GREAT deal)
3:00pm.. across the Missouri River and into Iowa enroute to Michigan on I-80
Sunday
Midnight.. check into hotel room in Grand Rapids, crash on bed
8:30am.. meet owners at local retail store parking lot, unit looks great! Hook up... and we're out of there.
Back home in time for dinner.

I'll add... I've had good luck finding on craigslist via searching google using: +scamp +trailer +craigslist

Good luck on your search!

Actually, it wasn't that long ago (couple of months I guess) that I saw..... I think it was a Compact Junior in one of the classified forums in New Jersey for cheap. If small isn't an issue, those things are the ticket.
