New to me - 1980 Scamp

Hello all,

Just bought today a 1980 Scamp. Its going to be a fun project - first thing is to get that ugly a/c unit out of there! Ive owned three old vintage Shasta campers but this is my first fiberglass camper. Always wanted one, feel like I got lucky finding it!

Welcome from a fellow Tar Heel (by transplant so unofficial)....

Yes, whoever put that A/C in should be shot! (with a water pistol.. lets keep this non-violent).

So what is that hole or round vent on the rear, starboard side? Looks like a vent for a portable A/C but with that monstrosity on the side I doubt it it.

The tail light? Its not stock, its LED, flat against the camper. Im not too sure why they replaced the lights, or why they removed the spare tire holder... but luckily at least the inside is fairly untouched.

Update

Update, not much work during cold months. Removed a lot of the rivets.

Glad the A/C is gone. Looking good. What are you doing about the paint job?

I’m curious about the year, though. It looks newer than 1980. Note the windows and especially the lack of contouring around the rear window in this 1980. I think the contouring, which allowed installation of a glass slider rather than curved plexiglass, arrived c.1985. That was also when radius sliders replaced the jalousies. Shortly after that, fuzzy marine headliner replaced Ensolite as the interior shell lining. Since yours appears to have Ensolite, I’m guessing 1985 or 1986.

Finished painting. Rustoleum oil based gloss white mixed 2:1 with acetone and sprayed with hvlp gun, about 30 psi, 1.4 nozzle. Turned out great. No hardener needed, dryed very fast.

I'm impressed! I worked in a fiberglass shop for a few years right after high school and I appreciate the the terrific job you did with the shell repair, paint, and decal. Congratulations on a very nice Scamp!!
