Rockhounding Newbie

After years with the minivan (.82 light seconds on that baby!) we have finally moved on and gotten a V6 Toyota Rav4 with a factory-installed tow kit. We're now into the fun (well, more fun!) part... finding a nice little trailer that we can pull. We've been up to the Scamp factory here in Minnesota (nice folks) but are always willing to take a road trip to a good camper!

I'm a computer geek, my wife's a 4th grade teacher, and we are both avid rockhounds. 900 pounds or so came back with us on our last trip out west!

Fossils, gems, or just plain ol' rocks? My wife swears that fossil hunting is just a giant conspiracy to get her to make rubble.

We're pretty omnivorous in our collecting! It was a blast looking for trilobites outside of Delta, Utah, last month. Now all we have to do is sort through everything!

We hunted there too. Sure felt like the middle of nowhere, driving out there. Saw an antelope!

Did you pay for the bulldozed site or hunt the vicinity?

Michigan has the petoskey stone, a type of fossillized coral. It's very beautiful when polished.

and beautiful agates on the beaches of lake superior, they polish into gems

North Shore Agates? First collecting trip as a couple, The Dot collected more than I did!

Petoskey Stones? First one entered my collection somewhere in the early 60's!

My specialty is fluorescent minerals from the Franklin/Ogdensburg area of New Jersey.

As an Oregonian... most of us are aware of Agate Beach on the Oregon coast. After a turbulent storm agates wash up or become visible to everyone! You can literally walk the beach and pickup agates by the pound. You should see it... everyone is looking down and picking. We call it "butts up" time.
