Scamp
Hi, I'm Brent from CO.
Looking at a used Scamp Slingshot(?) this weekend. It's the smallest Scamp I've seen. Saw it at a house and asked if it was for sale and looking at it over the weekend.
Needs a title and wiring, not sure what else.
Any tips for buying a used fiberglass and has anyone heard of the slingshot or did someone just throw the name on there. Looks legitimate from the road and passing by.
Thanks,
Brent

Frame, axle, floor, all the basics.
But no title would be a deal breaker for me.
See Buyers Check List here:
https://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/downloads.php
Scamp trailers are 13, 16 or 19 (feet).. No Slingshot model.

Crossroads has a Slingshot model, did you get a picture of the one you were looking at?

Thanks, it looked smaller than a 13, that's for sure. Maybe not, but I'll find out this weekend. It had slingshot written on the outside in Scamp lettering, that's why I thought it was? Still shaped like a Scamp, however.

- Needs new roof vent cover, it's missing but has a cover.
- Interior needs updating. Ceiling and wall carpet seams fine, floor definitely dirty and ugly.
- I dont necessarily care about stove, ac or heat, not sure if it works. Stove is nice for inclement weather.
- surface rust on frame, plywood floor seems fine.
- 7 pin wiring plug came off wiring harness. Simple enough to reattach?
- the side front lights need to be replaced as they are broken. Easy fix with LED.
- has an inexpensive 50ish watt solar panel on roof. Would probably buy and or update new battery
- the tires are new last year, he hasn't used it since, they didn't have any rot but would probably replace.
- the door has a small gap at the bottom, maybe 1/8 inch.
- roof is slightly discolored and entire trailer probably needs and update.
Doesn't have a title but not a terrible process in CO. He paid $500 last year and would want the same to cover expense. That seems fair for the shell alone and a project that could be interesting over the Winter, etc.
Pics soon.

Have you walked up and touched it?
A great deal if it is not some kind of a SCAM(p)

Scamp
It’s clearly a real trailer (post #6). Next question is whether it’s been previously stolen. Even as a project, market value is at least $1500-2000, so a price of $500 definitely raises a red flag.
Is it possible to get the VIN off the tongue and have the local police or motor vehicle department run it? It appears to have been manufactured after 1981, so it should have one. If it’s been removed, that raises another red flag.
For $500 I might well take a chance, but don’t put any additional money into it until you have a clear title. Make sure to get a bill of sale from the owner. Many states have a form on the motor vehicle website you can download. That would be evidence you were not complicit in any past shenanigans that might surface during the titling process, and if the seller cooperates, that would also show good faith on their part.

Q. How do I identify the year of my trailer by serial number? A. Trailers built between 1971-1982 used a non-standard number. The serial number started with E and was followed by four or five numbers. Some of the earliest trailers may only have had three numbers. The number following the E was the year of manufacture. E7 would have been built in 1977.
Starting in 1982 Scamp used the appropriate 17 digit serial number. Years from 1982-1989 the 11th digit is the designated year number as follows. So the 11th digit of the serial number will match up to the year code as noted below.
1982 C
1983 D
1984 E
1985 F
1986 G
1987 H
1988 I (Scamp did use “I” which is a not valid number)
1989 J & K (Switch to K in mid year)
In 1990 the check digit changed to the 10th digit. So the 10th digit of the serial number will match up to the year code as noted below.
1990 L
1991 M
1992 N
1993 P
1994 R
1995 S
1996 T
1997 V
1998 W
1999 X
2000 Y
2001 1
2002 2
2003 3
2004 4
2005 5
2006 6
2007 7
2008 8
2009 9
2010 A
2011 B
2012 C
2013 D

Nice find! It looks like it has the AC in the closet based on the vents next to the door. That is good since it uses a window type air conditioner available at big box stores for little money instead of a roof top RV air conditioner unit that costs big bucks.
You done good. Look at the floor around the edges where it meets the wall. Any leaks the water tends to go out at the edges, whichever place was lowest while stored. Any floor rot will often be at the wall/floor joint.

Looks like you are good to go. I’m curious how you did the VIN check- assuming you did it online?
Best wishes on your project! Many have done a lot worse, and often for a lot more money.
Very late thought... A 13' Scamp has a 10' cabin. Molded fiberglass manufacturers use the older convention of total length (tongue to bumper) to designate models. So does Airstream, but most conventional framed travel trailers now designate models by cabin length. Perhaps that's why it seemed smaller than 13'... because it is!

That one just needs a little elbow grease and a few things to check.
For your to-do list:
axle checked
bearings replaced
new flooring - you get to check condition of the floor at the same time
new battery
new propane tank, they expire
propane test of system
wash and wax
new cushions and/or cushion covers
wiring fixed
Great Scamp project you bought there and it'll look great when cleaned up!
