Shopping for an Egg!

Hi! I am new to the forum! Looking for a trailer to pull behind my FJ. Leaning toward a Parkliner! How would I put an awning on it? What mods would my FJ need beside the standard tow package? Is a sway bar necessary? I assume I can put some cool graphics (decal) on it right? Any help on these questions are greatly appreciated!

We've been looking around too Kris. What year is the FJ? It shouldn't need much past a tow package. Someone here has rigged an awning sort of thing on their ParkLiner, but I'm not sure who. ParkLiner has told me sway control is not necessary. Best way to get cool graphics is to get the trailer, then take it to a local sign place that does vinyl graphics. They seem to be all over the place!

Best of luck to you, and do keep us posted.

Frank - FJ is 2012. Has hitch, flat 4 plug. Do I new air shocks or anything else like additional transmission cooler?

Kris, it seems to me when I was looking at buying an FJ new, it had a tow capacity of 5000#s and a tongue weight capacity of 500#s. Really, if it's not in your manual, I would call the Toyota dealer service department nearest you just to check. If it is 500# tongue capacity, I doubt you'll need air shocks. Wanting air shocks is a different thing, they're great to have, but often not necessary.

With a tow capacity of 5000#s, I would expect Toyota made sure the vehicle was prepared to haul that kind of weight, but again, it couldn't hurt calling the local dealer and asking. Keep in mind though that salespersons will generally tell you what you want to hear. You really need to talk to someone in service.

I would almost bet that vehicle has wiring under the dash for a 7 pin connector if it came with the tow package. That's the way my GMC was. The 4 wires I needed for the brake controller were taped to the top of my steering column, easy to do, but I already had the 7 pin plug factory installed in the back too.

I wish I could help more, but the bottom line is go to the source (Toyota) for specific answers to some of your questions. Good luck!

Frank

Thanks Frank! Oddly the 2012 book says tow max of 4700 lbs, regardless I am not likely to approach that with a fiberglass trailer. I will check with dealership and have been getting info from the FJ Cruiser forum. Do you know anything about putting an awning on the ParkLiner?

Welcome. We have lots of archived information here, but you need to use the Google Search to find it. Here is a Google Search for Parkliner Awning:

Kris,
I have a 2012 FJ and I have the 4 and 7 pin connector with the class III hitch. I tow an Escape 19' trailer-another fiberglass brand made in Canada and they will customize the interior. See here Escape Trailer Industries > Home
I did use an Andersen W/D hitch, but no air bags nor auxiliary cooling was needed.
