Dealer Appraisal for trailer not on NADA - Seattle WA

Hi there, I just picked up a 1986 Mity-Lite trailer last Monday. When I went to the DMV to register it, they couldn't find anything on NADA and told me to go to a dealership to get them to appraise it to determine the value. Has anyone in Seattle WA done this and do you have any tips?

Thanks,

linh

It seems to me if you have a bill of sale, that would establish the value. regardless of what anyone elses opinion may be.

But in WA, maybe not so.

Live in Washington

I licensed my new to me trailer at a private license office (not the DMV) and they accepted the bill of sale for the unit's price. You can find them on line. Near me Fred Meyer's had an office in store.

Thanks for the info! I tried Bill Pierre, so I guess it does matter which licensing office you go to.

Had to kinda laugh. Of course it's not in NADA. NADA means nada in the all-molded-world. You might get a better deal for tax purposes by going to a dealer, since they know next to nothing about all-molded too... might have appraised it for $500!! Good luck

If you need a value for your DMV then its probably for taxes. Aim low. My experience with DMVs is that they want a bill of sale but then ignore the price paid if their references list a higher value. That way they get to charge more in taxes. But in your case since they don't have value book to go by, they want you to do their job. I would first argue that the bill of sale IS the value unless THEY have documentation otherwise.. ask for the supervisor. If that does not work then yes, perhaps a dealer who knows not to much will help. If you need a more formal appraisal in your area then perhaps your insurance company can refer you to someone.

But if looking for the value for insurance, thats a different matter. In that case looking at similar prior sales is a good way to go. You want the fair amount covered, not some low ball value from someone who does not know what the camper could really sell for in the private market.

Do you know if the cost to register is the same at a private office versus DMV?
