Any lock can be defeated, it’s just a question of how much time and effort. I’ve seen reports of people stealing fiberglass trailers by winching them up onto a flatbed… no lock will prevent that. Mostly, you’re just trying to make your trailer less desirable than the alternatives.

We use locks, but we also use a GPS tracker from LandAirSea.com. It can text you when the tracker leaves an area, so hopefully you can get the police involved before the trailer has gone very far or the thieves have had a chance to find the tracker.

One very important benefit from a GPS tracker is for your loved ones to keep you in their sites, and may potentially save your life. If you a going to be traveling within the parts of the country with poor cell reception, the GPS tracker will show them where you are at the given moment.
Let's say they see that you parked along a highway for no apparent reason. You may be having some urgent health issue, and can't drive any more. Knowing your location, they may alert local authorities to check up on you. Alternatively, let's say you'd told them you were staying at a remote site for 2 days, and you're there for three days, they can also call the local sheriff to see how you are faring.

Original poster, I hope the Boler is found, the thieves are found, tried and sentenced.

Just to clarify: if you want that feature you should double-check how the GPS tracker transmits its location. Ours uses cell service to send the location, so it can’t send the location when there’s no cell signal. It was also only $30 for the device (plus $10/month on a two year contract for the service) from LandAirSea.

I know that there are satellite messengers that backcountry enthusiasts use, and they generally also have GPS tracking. Those would work anywhere that they have a clear view of the sky, but they are generally a couple hundred dollars for the device (plus a monthly service fee).
