As long as the "liquor locker" doesn't run out, the rest can be dealt with.

We use our Casita for hunting in temperatures that are often in the single digits. We open the valves on both propane tanks and allow the automatic changeover to do its' job. I would rather check the level of my propane tanks in the light of day , then get up in the middle of the night to a cold trailer and then have to go outside in the dark to open a valve.

If it's going to be really cold we carry a spare 20 lb tank.

I too expected to see the knob turn, but I couldn't understand what force would move it.

David, am I Scamping?
The original regulator that came with my Escape had an indicator like the one you are describing. It barely turned red when the tanks switched. The result - running out of propane at the Grand Canyon in 25F temperatures with the closest refill 30 miles away. I switched to one that has a more positive indicator. I switched to a Marsh Excel regulator which only has a small window in the front, but makes a full color change when the tanks switch. I use a dental mirror to check since I have a hard cover on the tanks.

Pic of Marshall controls showing green - full tanks. If one was empty it would show red.
