If you really wanted to class the touch lamp up you could use a ceiling rosette like they use on ceiling fans.

Most likely the original ceiling led light has a very poor ground and lights because of the very low current required to light the led. If you apply voltage to one side of the some leds and hold the other side of the led it will light!
