Hand rocker pump
Hi, all campgrounds are closed so I may as well work on the trailer. I need to replace this, it is old, from a 1978 Trillium 4500. I have seen a couple online, with wildly varying reviews. Any suggestions? Stay well.

In general marine equipment tends to be better quality (and pricier ) than RV stuff. You might try a marine outlet. West Marine and Defender are two that come to mind.

if it was mine to work on the first thing I would do is take it apart and see if replacing Orings or washers and perhaps a spring could restore it to functioning condition. It is rather fun to tear such things apart just to see how they work even if they can't be restored.

I'm looking to replace mine on the Czmpster too. The handle just flops. It used to work. I guess no harm done it taking it apart. Worst case is having to replace it (or patch a hole).

I found that rebuild kits are usually on the shelf at RV parts stores.
I went through a couple until I found a nickel-plated brass rocker pump out of an old fish boat. This one's built so well I can leave it in my will

That link shows a hand pump that looks to possibly be an exact size replacement. The Amazon listing does state the dimensions of the cutout hole so that would be a good thing to check before you order it.
Just as a general information note to help find replacement parts such as this. Use keywords and then select for an image search. Images are a great way to turn up items that look to be exact fit replacements. The keywords I used were
"RV sink hand pump"

Hi Marjie,
When I removed my old hand pump and examined the internals I found them disintegrated and I judged it a total loss. I purchased a handpump from Vintage Trailer Supply, product number VTS-699, for $34. The new pump is functional and I like it. But it doesn't feel as solid as the original (1973). When I pump it, I feel the need to grasp the base with my other hand. The instability might not be workmanship of the new pump - I don't know for sure - it could be that I had to modify my countertop to accommodate the different sized base of this replacement pump.

Yes, I am familiar with West Marine. The part was a bit too expensive, but probably better than the replacements I found. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks, I did see this. The reviews are not so good, for this and another similar one. May have to go for it though.

Yes, this is one I was considering. Mediocre reviews, but not much choice out there. Thanks.

Of course the reviews for the original might have said the very same thing about the pump if back then they had those internet reviews around.s

The Valterra pumps are rubbish. The body (housing) is plated plastic, and the bosses where the handle and spout are attached are nowhere near strong enough; if you tighten the gland nut, trying to get it to stop leaking, the boss cracks and the whole thing is ruined.
What I suspect happened is that when Valterra went to a plastic housing, they simply copied the metal housing directly, with no thought for the differing material strengths of metal and plastic.

I was actually able to obtain the washers and rings at my local Ace hardware - takes a little time to get the correct ones but if you take your old ones in to size correctly they have TONS of different washers and o rings to choose from and ended up being much cheaper than buying the refurb kit from Camping World. Mine looks slightly different from yours but probably similar guts. I even had a miniature sewing machine from the 50’s that used a 2” rubber wheel - found an o ring there that worked perfectly - and was like $ 1.29.
I also ended up getting a small pump and single filter faucet to use with my battery. Like it MUCH better so don’t really use my pump much now - but kept it installed anyway...

I just replaced mine this week. The old one cracked when a freeze hit and I hadn’t winterized. I got a Valterra RP800 on eBay for $30, free shipping.

When I acquired my 13 foot Boler. the hand pump would not pump water. I took it apart and noticed the leather seal was very dry and cracked. Could not find a replacement. Then in Princess Auto I found a package of assorted replacement seals for hydraulic cylinders. One of the rubber ones looked like it might work for me. Long story short, it's still pumping water. Pump on!!

I added a small 12 volt pump to mine and hooked it up inline. I can now use a tap instead of pumping. I still have my hand pump just in case but it rarely gets used now. Flip the switch, get water, shut it off. I have a thread on here that shows what I did. Great upgrade I think.
