I got intrigued by something in the article. They mentioned that the company was making a pop up top for a Volkswagon Camper. So I went looking to see if I could find an image of one and sure enough it is an exact match for the Campster mechanism and the canvas is even the same yellow color and a similar style of construction. Here is a link to a 1970 brochure for the VW camper showing the pop up top.
