Thanks all for the replies! I took your suggestions and scraped away on the frame behind the hitch, and lo and behold, a faint VIN appeared! I was able to make out 7 of the 15 or so numbers in order....

Some heaters come with a jumper that allow you to cut the wattage in half. At 700 watts you should be OK. Its usually a red cable.
