I believe that is installed before the top and bottom halves are joined. The other alterative is to cut it in pieces. why did you need to remove it ?

I believe that you are on the right track to do a total gut and start from scratch pretty much. Glue and screw as you start to rebuild . Use stainless nuts/bolts, screws and power gun...
