Yeah, very untechnical, I put a flat edge on the rear of the tire and it's 3 3/4 to the part that reaches the drum. My figuring is this the back of the tire is what is going to rub on the body. Tire is 7.8 inches wide.
Also nobody was as shocked as me to see 1500 lb rating on the axle tag. Wow!
I was going by the common acceptance of #3000. I figure my wife puts in 1500 lbs of shoes each trip!

Confirmation at last. I also have the older 17 ft burro, 1985. My axle tag is illegible, but I had a trailer technician who packed my wheel bearings and repaired my electric breaks and told me that the axle was rated at 1500 pds. So, that's it, I will definitely be replacing the axle this spring. Does that mean my 13 tires will also have to be replaced (hubs and breaks, too?)

And we all thought Escondidos were such crap. I did not credit the idea that the earlier Iowa trailers could be underspec'd as to axle cap. until pj got a look at his. And now two of them? Amazing!

Hey, I never thought that the Iowa axle specs may be in the sales brochure in the Doc Center. Are they? What's under those UHauls, Tom?

I never saw a ratings tag, but UHaul generally erred on the side of stout.

I s'pose it's a long shot, but could that 1500 possibly be "kilograms"???

On Henschen Axles:

One of the principals of that now-gone company is still in the business, sort of, and active at the Airstream Forums. His name's Andy Rogozinski (ASF screen avatatar:"InlandRV Center, In"). There's a link in his signature to his contact information. Here's a link to one discussion of the brand: Henschen Axles.

Good catch. Henschen out of biz in Indiana since 2009 so this is the hard-to-find feller with the "new old stock." Only Henschen torsion arm axle I've seen 3000 lbs. embossed on the tag and those Hoosiers aint all that metric. But as a wag not bad.

kinda what i thought when I rubbed off enough crud to read it. I haven't gotten around to weighing the critter yet so don't know.
As for Arcitecture, If you are ever close let me know and I will get you the premium quarter tour much better than he standard nickle tour. We have just added a couple more places to the mix, unfortunately my wastewater treatment plant design did not make it. go figure.

so you have been here already. The glass is a Chihuly. I am partial to the tower at Millrace park by the River that is also a sundial hardly anyone notices. Tingleys kinetic sculpture was better when it was first put in motion but they had to cut out some of the movement options because they were afraid it might self destruct. all in all we have a lot of examples of world class designers in our little community.

We visited for a day in Dec. 09 and did the brochure-guided drive and walk tour. Stayed in a "design statement" dog-friendly hotel overnite and then up to Wabash to see inlaws. After a few years most of the detail has slipped from my grasp. I do remember the brick tower; wind was blowing very strong off the river while we walked around. Sounds like you are involved with the "underpinnings" of the town in your design work? As an aside, I talked to a young man on the Southwest Chief (Amtrak) a few yrs. back who "translated" respected architectural achievements for a toymaker. His medium: LEGGO blocks.

I am installing, only four bolts, The #3500 Dexter lines up with the current mount holes.
If that doesn't pan out I will have new mounts welded on, but it looks like a plug in.
The trailer is up on jacks all around, I put a floor jack under the middle of the old axle, popped out the bolts and it lowered right down. All by myself! Hopefully I can reverse the procedure easily. I do plan to have help to line it up.
