Got my U-Haul camper 2 days ago!

Glad to part of this forum.
Drove it down from the Ga Mtns in a storm after reseating the tires and it handled great.
I'm excited to get to work on it. It has been sitting for years.
First priorities tires and rear lights.
Thanks for any thread links you y'all send my way!

Hi Matt, to FiberglassRV. We're glad you're here

There's a number of U-Haul owners on the forums, someone will be along shortly. And everyone is kind and helpful.

Welcome to the UHaul family, Matt! You will have a lot of fun with your "new"trailer.

Since these are all at least 27 years old, the rear light wiring/sockets often need repair. In fact, I was just tinkering with the marker lights on our 16' VT again on Sunday. It may be time to replace the original sockets/housing to get better contact with the bulbs. As my wife CindyL says, "No trip is complete without having to fix one or more of the lights."

I find it a challenge rather than a chore and love working on it, though. I'm sure you'll feel the same way!

Welcome.

Lots of information here for UHaul owners including all about the rear lights.

The secret is to use the Google box at the bottom of the Search pull down. It will provide you with hours of reading. Also there are UHaul manuals in the Document center.

When you get those tires, be sure that that are: Marked "For Trailer Use" and are "Load Range C". Passenger car tires often do not do well on trailers.

Mine was in good shape, but others found that theirs were rotten and they replaced them. It is a good opportunity to upgrade the wiring to a 7 pin and include a wire to charge the batery while you drive.

I replaced all the light wiring except what was in the walls to the marker lights. The original wire harness under the trailer was cracked with bare wire exposed. I had no problem with the marker lights other than water leakage around them. New marker lights are available from Uhaul. Check the frame, some Uhaul owners have found rust through issues. Body to frame bolts should be replaced as they rust away where they pass through the floor. Windows leak but can be rebuilt. A Scamp rear window can be made to fit in place of the original rear window. Another member has found where to get side windows custom made at a reasonable price. Don't break the tail light lenses, they are not available. Lots of good info here, just ask.

Another UHaul in the house!

Mr. Matt,
I would like to also add congrats and welcome to the FGRV and more specifically to us ' Uhaulers '. These are great lil rigs once they are sorted out and really ideal for hitching it up and rolling!

I bought these tires recently and quite happy with them (even tho they
they were 5 years old, they are as new, and bias ply as original to the
UHaul) 2 New 6 50 13 Goodyear U Haul Bias Trailer Tire | eBay

The tail lights lens are pretty much unavailable, as Mr. Bob says, unless our
tail light creator 'Lanny' or someone else come thru with some new ones.
You can make your own or do a conversion to non-original with alloy housings that are still available from UHaul. To get the upper ambers to work as directionals you probably need to add a converter to go from two way to 3 way. http://radauto.com/shop/electronics/.../prod_515.html

Going to the 7way plug as Mr. Tom says is definitely the way to go so you can add the battery charging and two extra circuits like electric brakes or backup lights. (if you only have a 4 flat now)

The documents section here has free downloads of the parts manuals, etc. so you can follow the wiring diagrams (a separate 12 volt circuit for exterior and interior as well as the 110V AC circuit ) If your original insulation is still OK, as mine was, it is all pretty straight forward, but, faulty grounds seem to be one of the biggest problems with trailer wiring in general.

All the Best and Happy UHaulin!

Welcome to the Uhaul adventure.

To correct KevinA, I growl that "something always breaks down." It can be lights, it can be doors, it can be tires, or, only for us, the wheel hub. Be sure to take along tools when you camp. Like anything, including people, as we age, things break.

And have a great time. Our Uhaul has taken us places we never would have gone without it.

Speaking of bearing hubs, you need to know that they are the same as as Camaro / Firebird from about 1993 to 2002. Universal part number is #513018. So if you need one, just go to an auto parts store.

Mr. Matt,
I forgot to mention Mr.Mike Meyers cross reference list in the documents section. It might help make your hunt even more enjoyable...http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/d...ts%20Parts.pdf
