Towing Scamp 16 with 2016 X3 28d possible?

Potentially looking at a new Scamp 16 Deluxe Layout B. My current X3 uses a small diesel engine (2L) with 180HP and 280lb.

Officially, this X3 tows up to 3500lb and I assume 10% of that is the max tongue weight.

My yellow sticker says I have 910lb payload. Between my wife & I, we weigh exactly 260lb. We don't expect any other companions during our travel.

Given this, can we use our car as a tow vehicle? We do expect to go over the Rockies and other potentially challenging areas.

What is an X3? If the book says it has a 3500 lb towing capacity, then yes, you're good to go. You will need a brake controller and a 7 pin connector.

Sounds like a nice combo to me. You seem to be looking at the right numbers. We’ve got at least one X5 diesel owner on the forum, but I don’t recall hearing anyone mentioning an X3. Never know- there could be one lurking out there in the shadows. There might also be an X3 owner’s group with some firsthand towing experience.

X5 will be my next vehicle. 7800 lbs tow capacity. I bet the X3 has some nice tow ability also.

Only thing to watch out for is payload. 910 pounds is pretty low, and is not only the weight of driver and any passenger(s), but it also includes any stuff in your tow vehicle, tow mirrors, tongue weight and receiver hitch, plus any options added after the factory. So if the hitch was added later, that comes out of payload. Roof rack, bicycles, etc. It all adds up.

I've added a number of options post factory to my F150, and the available payload is well below the figure on the door. Its usually more of an issue with trucks, as a lot more post factory add ons.

Still, you should be able to manage within that payload number, just be aware of it.
