Finally weighed my Bigfoot...kind of

Found this scale at a rest stop. This is the weight of my camper, loaded, minus the tongue weight...which I’ll admit leaves a big question unanswered. But I can safely assume I’m between 250-400lbs based on similar trailers.

The scale says 2820 if you can’t tell.

Sounds accurate to me. Our hitch weight is 345 lbs. when loaded to camp.
This was measured with a Sherline scale at a rally.

My 2002 17' Bigfoot loaded for travel had 410 lb tongue weight on a Sherline, and 3510 axle weight at a CAT scale.

We had a chance to weigh Peanut loaded for a 28-day trip and took it--Paul ran back and put the tongue jack down, too, getting the whole picture at once.

We were at 2300 without the tongue off the car; with it off, we were at 2600. 300 pounds heavier than what we weighed for a 3-day trip a while back. Some of that was library books! Food, clothing, towels, more dogfood than usual, more dog supplies than usual, extra lots of things. Still 60 shy of capacity on the tongue, but something to watch.

Always interesting to get at least an approximation, isn't it?

BEST
Kai

Good idea! Since I was in a hurry, in a bit of wind storm, and unsure whether I was really allowed to use this scale, I just got on then back off again pretty fast. But it would have been good to check the weight connected, then disconnect and put the tongue jack down and see the total weight. Next time. I drive by that rest station fairly often; just never thought to sneak onto the truck scale before.

Yes, it's really nice to get some idea. Which made me go back to this tag and read it a bit more closely for the first time. I had seen these numbers and just read them as the weight of the trailer, but clearly I've got a weight rating, a dry weight (1873lb dry weight from the factory?), and a "tongue load range", which is just a number, not a range...

Anyway, knowing an actual wet, loaded weight is helpful. Especially since this is with essentially everything I own in the trailer. There's definitely some heavy stuff stored in my truck, too, but the trailer had everything it would normally have in it. This should be very to close to as heavy as it gets. The fresh water was only at about 3/4, since I don't like traveling with any more than I think I'll need. I do fill it completely just before "camping" somewhere for the week while I'm working. So it does travel short distances with a little more weight than the scale showed, but if I'm driving more than an hour, I rarely have any fresh water in it at all if there's any chance of finding water closer to the destination.

A lot of people are in fantasyland on what their actual trailer weighs. Always good to have REAL data!

I hear you about wanting to get on and off fast; the first time we weighed at a truck stop we felt the same way. This time, we said to heck with it, there are no trucks here, we'll fool around a bit more--and we did. Nobody seemed to care.

Our car weighs about twice as much as Peanut when loaded for the long trip--that's good.

Happy weighing!

Kai

I remember from going to the dump that my truck weighs around 4400lb.
