1975 Ventura Restoration

Hi, we're new to the forum. We picked up a 75 Ventura 13'ft trailer 3 weeks ago. Looks great on the outside/inside...but on close inspection, the previous owners took great care in hiding the leaking windows, vent and door. We decided to gut the whole thing and good thing cuz when we lifted up the lino, it was all gooey, wet glue. We've taken out the ceiling, floor, all the wood panel walls, dinette benches, cupboards. We've replaced the window operator cranks and ceiling vent and new upholstery. We're just about ready to put in new flooring but need to fix the door which is bent...looks broken inside and has no support. No point in putting in new floor if the water can come in. Does anyone have any suggestions on a quick fix? We've seen some replacement doors for $800. I've posted some pics. The finished product has to be finished by July 10th....in time for Craven! We've never done anything like this before, but we're loving it!

I also wanted to mention that we were able to find many helpful suggestions, pics and advice from this group as we've been working on our camper. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. You need to be finished by July 10th of this year? I have always found that Murphy's Law always shows up and things take 2 to 3 times as long to do as I figured. Good Luck and hope to see your finished product at a gathering in the near future.

Hi Carter & Sue, to FiberglassRV, we're glad you're here

You're fortunate, your door is a built door... or put together with screws. You should be able to disassemble it and replace the fireglass panel that's cracked. Do you have any pictures to share of the area?

THANKS for the other pics too. Looks like you've got a nice lil' rollin' home.

Boy those pictures bring back memories, gutted mine 2 years ago! As for the door, I made one by cutting down an interior door from a house (plywood type not the particle board ones) . I then laminated white formica to both sides. Then added the original aluminum edging. I used a new door latch and sold my old one(the bargman L400 are worth about $150 if they are in good shape). The problem with the door is the cheap window used in them. It allows the water to get into the inside of the door and rots all the wood in the bottom half.

BTW I have a 76 Ventura

BTW if you need replacement insulation, I used fiberglass ceiling panels. It was a pain finding 3/4" insulation.

my trailer rebuild is here

HeeHaw we made it to Craven and had a great time. The camper is not complete...but the rest is cosmetics. I'm so happy with it. Here are the pics.

We still have a door to remake (Thanks Dudley)...... all the edging....some odd and ends on cabinets, the closet, lights and floor. We also broke the front window so we will have to have some glass work done.

Did you have any problems getting through the mud at Craven? Our friends had to leave their fifth wheel there for later pick up - it was totally stuck.

Our road was pretty dry by Monday and we didn't have any problems. We got lucky!

We saw a Ventura in Nipawin about supper time. Was it you by any chance? We were in a red Element and just approaching the four way stop.

Oh well..........I wonder how many of them are still exploring the highways and campgrounds? We certainly don't spot as many of them as we do Trilliums and Bolers. Other than the one we sold we have only ever spotted two - one in Calgary and the one today!

Hi, my name is David and I have the same exact camper in the same condition I want to gut it but am overwhelmed at the prospect. My wife and I were floored by your transformation. Any help and suggestion you can give.

Very nice work, I've had a similar surprise in exploring my new fgrv, might have looked a little more solid on the surface than below, but what can you expect for something that old. You mentioned the Windows were a big part of the original moisture problem, what did you do to get them sealed up tight and waterproof?

David - it does seem a bit overwhelming. My husband is by no means a regular 'handy man' but he has fixed things here and there. This is the first major project he's undertaken and has done a fantastic job. He's turned into a real perfectionist. Everything we didn't know, we learned on this site from other folks with similar campers / issues. The best advise i can give you is when you gut your camper, save every piece. You'll either reuse the parts (ie. window frames) or use the panels to trace out your new ones. This makes things a little easier. If you need any advise, let us know.

Tygo - we didn't want to replace the windows, so we removed the frames and repacked them around the interior with butyl tape....and caulked with clear silicone on the outside. We had one window that kept leaking - it actually turned out to be a signal light on the side on the camper. The rubber was worn away and the water was coming in throught the inside screws. We cleaned it up and resealed it. All is good.
