Door hinge pin of 79 Surfside

The problem I have is the pin of the door hinge has, through the years, moved up, out of the lower hinge socket, and no longer engaged in the lower part of the hinge. The door won't hang correctly because of it. The photos below show the pin sticking up approx 3/8" above where it should be. The other pic shows how it should be. I've tried to reposition the pin by hammering it with nail set and drift pin, but it won't budge.
Are there any machinists out there that could shed some light on this problem?Click image for larger version

Maybe the pin is not aligned with the bottom hole in the stationary part, therefore you can't drive the pin back where it should be. Most likely this is the issue as you say the door doesn't hang correctly.

The pin definitely has to be precisely aligned in the hole. I have also tried to tap the pin up, to remove it entirely, but was unable to move it.
My thought is that possibly the hinge was heated to expand, before the pin was driven in. The cooling process then seats the pin solidly. I have no idea why or how the pin could have loosened up to where it is now though.

Probably a "press fit", where the tolerances are very close between the pin and the hole requiring it to be pressed together. I would hesitate to hammer on it much as you risk breaking something. You'll probably have to remove the hinge, then find a way to press the pin back in, like in a vise. Heat on the hinge may help.

When I was a maintenance machinist at GE we called the millwrights the "Bulls" as they did all the heavy work LOL. Ask your brother in law if he's ever seen a "Bull of the Woods" calendar. Sort of like "Dilbert" but for the machinist trade. I haven't seen one in many years.
