Scamp Door Seal

I need to.replace the door seal on my 1987 19' scamp.
What should I use for this seal?

Absolutely order the "seal" directly from Scamp as they have developed a new door seal. I replaced my seal on our 13' Deluxe last Spring and it's a great seal. Be prepared for the door to require significant pressure to close for a while until the new seal gets compressed/seated. Remember, hard slamming of the door is not the best method when closing a Scamp door. Best method to close the door is to turn the handle to the open position, push hard to close the door completely and release the handle which should click. You may even need to put a shoulder to it for a while to ensure it's completely closed. When inside the Scamp you may need to slightly slam (from door open 6" or so) to completely close for a while. Also lock the door at all times when going down the road!

Order the new seal from Scamp. Much better than the original. The door may fit quite tightly at first, requiring a firm push to compress the seal while opening and closing. It will improve with time as the seal takes a set.

EDIT- RSchleder beat me to it. What he said. To add, locking the door only prevents the outside handle from turning. When the door pops open while towing, it’s often because the tongue catches on the tip of the striker. Compressing the seal ensures the tongue extends fully behind the striker. Locking then prevents the weight of the handle bouncing down the road from retracting the tongue. Some people reinstall the handle with the lever pointed down, which also prevents bouncing from retracting the tongue AND reduces wear on the lock mechanism.

It looks like the "new" door seal is soon to be obsolete.
Scamp now has the new "flatter" door.
Anybody needs a door gasket...better order one soon.
It is well worth it as an improvement.

Do is the "newer" flater seal better than what they are selling now?

No, there is now a whole new door design for 2021 which is different from any previous Scamp door.
The gasket in question fits all pre-2020 Scamps.

The previous owner of my 19' Scamp had installed an after-market door handle and latch.



After installing the new seal on my Scamp, I found that it was very difficult to latch. I ended up shimming out the door a bit, and it now closes fine.

OK....I got the new door seal from Scamp today. One lengthy piece (~16 feet long), and one somewhat heavier (~1 inch thick and multi-ribbed) about 3 feet long.
Would it be safe to assume the shorter and thicker piece would be fo the bottom of the door ? And, the longer piece attaches around the opening the unit ?

To someone who's actually installed a new (Scamp) door seal, please verify or correct what I'm thinking.
Just being careful.....

You got it right.
The gasket used to come with enough extra to do the threshold with the same material.
It is nice to see they now have a dedicated threshold gasket.
When I have installed them, I have used a solid square closed cell gasket for the threshold and the new Scamp Gasket for the door...

The gap at the bottom of the door is significantly larger than the sides or top.
Should I be concerned?

When I used the 2 new seals purchased from Scamp, the finished (installed) seals both on the sides ,top and bottom have NO gap. The door fits very tight all the way around. Perhaps the difference in gap is the reason Scamp provides 2 different seals, one for the door sides/top and a 2nd one for the threshold!

That's why I used a 3/4" closed cell foam for the threshold.
The new door gasket is much better and the "wing" design is a big help to compensate for variations and temperature changes.


Be sure and get the surface clean and all adhesive removed before installation of the new gasket.
It is self stick and should be ok but I used weatherstrip adhesive as a light supplement with good success.


Being an '87 you might have an adjustable extrusion at the threshold?

Floyd you have made my day! I too seem to have a lot of open space at the bottom of our door on our 95 13f.

I was just looking at the threshold the other day and wondering if I have some adjustment there.

Anyone with specific instructions as exactly where to attach gasket on door frame. Does it go right on the edge of the frame, or out a bit?
