1500 Bigfoot tire clearance

I have a 2005 17ft with 225/75r/ 15 tires. How can I get more clearance in the tire well? It has 6 bolt rims?

Would 205 75r 15 give me more clearance?

if your springs mount on top of axle, put them under axle, could use longer shackles but this will give some slop to axle

I had a lift kit put on mine it made a big difference, before doing it I could not put my hand in around the wheel well, now no problem.

I got it from my local RV shop, the lift was about 4 inches.
Originally I wanted the axle flip done but the shop said the lift kit was a better way to go. It worked out well.

You can google lift kits for trailers.

I don't know about the '05, but for older Bigfoot trailers swapping the 4" drop-axle for a straight axle is the best "lift" possible. 4" of lift without any actual lift kits like blocks etc. With the added bonus, for those of use with older trailers, of getting a new axle, wheel bearings, brakes.

Exactly. In addition, consider ground clearance. I'm referring to the distance from the ground to the axle tube. If you use spacers you do lift the frame and body higher, but the axle tube to ground distance stays the same.

I agree. The only benefit, other than looking cool, for those who are into spending money and sacrificing utility just to look cool, is that it does allow you to add bigger tires, which the OP wants to do. Those bigger tires will give you more clearance. But removing the 4" of drop in the axle is probably the most efficient way to get more clearance.

I did the axle flip. It raised the 17.5 Bigfoot about 5 inches. It is pretty tall now but the axle itself is still low as it was originally. Results....plenty of tire clearance and better departure angle but it now has more wind resistance and the typical stabilizer jacks are not long enough. The hitch is also squishy when parked. When the brakes are shot I will probably order a new straight axle and that would give me 3 inch lift instead of the 5.

Can you give me the make and model of the straight axle. Sam

a 205 tire is slightly smaller diameter than a 225, a little over 1/4 inch. Since the clearance with the wheel well is related to the RADIUS of the tire, you are really talking about slightly over 1/8th inch. Most would not find 1/8 inch meaningful.

Lifting the axle gives you meaningful increase. Depending on the age of the axle, it may be due replacement anyway.
