Towing Parkliner with 2018 Outback

Hey! I’m thinking it’s a no, but does anyone pull a parkliner with a Subaru Outback? It’s a 2018 Subaru.

I just found a great deal on a parkliner.

Thanks!

Towing Parkliner with 2018 Outback

In my opinion it's a no-go because Subaru limits tongue weight to 200 pounds. Travel trailers generally require a minimum 10% tongue weight for stable, sway-free towing. That means you are effectively limited to a 2000 pound travel trailer. Parkliner will exceed that by quite a bit.

Furthermore, tow ratings assume only two "average" people in the front seats and nothing in the back. Back seat passengers and cargo further reduce available tongue weight.

For that reason, an Outback is limited to towing a 13' trailer, and even some of those with a battery and two LP tanks on the tongue will exceed the 200 pound tongue weight limit.

Thanks! I was thinking it wouldn’t work. We weren’t going to get an egg but then I saw a 2014 for sale for $13k. But we just bought the outback last weekend LOL. Well it’s a good deal for someone else!

It won't have all the bells and whistles of the Parkliner, but a basic Scamp (or similar 13' egg) is a great match for your Outback.

We have a Scamp 13, the classic layout with sofa/bunks in front and a small dinette in back. We stay in state parks mostly, with restrooms and often showers, so no onboard bathroom (and the maintenance that goes with it). We cook and eat outside most of the time, but the small inside galley is there for a bad weather day. Small and simple works for us.

You do have options.

That's about $10K under what a 2014 Parkliner in good condition would sell for.

Dunno about that. There's been a 2012 PL posted for sale here for quite some time @ 15,900 and it hasn't sold yet. I don't see how a 2-year-newer PL could be worth $23k.

I feel your pain. I bought a 2017 new Outback 7 weeks before deciding we wanted a FG trailer. I had ordered a 13' Scamp and figured the Outback would work. After much thought and research I determined it was not worth me "worrying" about a few pounds for safety. I traded the Outback after a couple months use for a Highlander rated at 5k lbs and 400 lbs tongue weight. I was then able to upgrade to a larger trailer. Absolutely best decision I have made re vehicles and trailers. I did loose $7k on the trade in, but it is $ gone and we are very happy with the new Highlander.
As a kicker to the story, my Highlander was a 2016, bought from Toyota used, a dealer rental. Financing charge of 4.9 % . I ended up loosing more money when I traded it for a 0% 2018 Highlander AND gained approx 5MPG in the deal.

Bottom line, rethink the Outback, IMHO.

Parkliner, Outback, Ascent, etc

Hi Rebekah,

The Parkliner is just a little too much weight for the Outback. That said, We towed our 2012 Eggcamper with a 4 cyl. 2014 Outback from MASS. to TEXAS and back and it towed great. But it was right at the 200# TW limit and close to weight limits in both the car and trailer.

We still have the Outback, but now we usually tow with a 2006 Tundra small v-8. The gas mileage is 14 as compared to the Outback's 16 when towing. So, having a lot of headroom on the towing capacities, extra storage space, and only losing 2 mpg is no-brainer for us.

The larger Subaru Ascent is coming out this summer. It's 21/27mpg as compared to 25/32 for the Outback. A 5000# tow package is available. And, my guess is that the Ascent's towing mpg will be very close to the Outback. Trade-in might be a better deal at your Subaru dealer. Most larger SUV's and most all Pickups will tow the Parkliner without effort.

GL Mark
