Doing some calculations, I would need to spend $120 US to get the tanks and amount of propane that's in my refillable 10 lb. tank. My tank cost me $40 and a fill costs about $10. You can also buy 5 lb. tanks.
So, it's OK with me that the offer is only U-Haul US.

In this case, bigger is cheaper. In the state of Oregon, a lot of our state parks have huge recycle bins for the disposable 1# containers. Those bins are overflowing full every time I see one. This may help with that problem as not everyone wants to lug around a larger tank. So, I still think it's a NEATO idea.

I like the idea. I don't use more than 1-2 lbs of propane on a trip so don't like carrying the big tank. I could get a 5 lb tank but this would be much more convenient.

This is good news for HC1 owners as it is designed to use the smaller tanks and should make it much cheaper to use.

People who have large tanks are not their target market.

1 lb tanks can be purchased around here for a little over $3 each. I think this refillable tank is great for the environmentally motivated individual, but not so much for the financially motivated person.

5 lb tanks? I didn't know they made that size. I'll have to check it out.

Five pound tank is more expensive than ten and ten is more expensive than twenty.
I opted for the ten as a compromise; capacity and convenience.
Earlier I had a five pound tank and ran into a problem getting it filled, because the person doing the fill had only been trained ( if you can call it that ) on filling twenty pound tanks. That only happened once in a small town.

Wonder how the concept of filling three different sizes of water jugs went for them.......

But those $3, 1 lb tanks are not refillable.. or it's not recommended and yes, I do know people have done it, some successfully, some not.

For $11.95 you get a tank that's refillable for 12 years. If you use the 1 lb tanks, how many do you go through in a ten year period? U-Haul says it costs $1.95 to refill. Bet I can find it cheaper than that.

Exactly. Twelve refills to break even is not bad. Right now, getting refills might be the inconvenience- I'm guessing the equipment to refill them is proprietary, so you have to find a U-Haul store.

If the idea catches on, price and convenience may improve as more vendors offer the service. I think the concept has merit. I just hate throwing away those canisters, and even where available, recycling is far less efficient than reusing.

I'm toying with swapping the single 5 gal. tank on my Scamp for two 2.5 gal. tanks- one to fuel the trailer (stove and furnace only, no fridge, used infrequently) and one to fuel the camp kitchen (stove & lantern). I already have one from my tenting days- love the size, and plenty of capacity for our camping style. Might make the battery box easier to access. Expensive, though, and no after-hours swaps at convenience stores... hmmm...

It's about time. I've carried a 5 lb for years because I hate the waste and now cost of the 1 lb canisters. I do carry a couple of canisters for backup but really never need them. If these work well and become widespread I'll likely switch back.

You'll need to carry the 5 lb as backup in case you can't find a U-Haul dealer near by with propane.
