The whole exchange rate thing depends on what people earn. If Canadian residents and Estados Unidos residents happen to earn the same income buying power (with exchange rate taken into account) for the same job, then I would agree with Floyd about equal buying power.
But there's no reason to assume equal incomes in this sense. And then the exchange rate changes with time, which changes the relative advantage or disadvantage in buying power. Thus when US bucks suddenly can buy more CAD than before, that does indeed act like a discount on the Canadian product for US consumers as their buying power has increased relative to the Canadian's buying power... unless, of course, the product price increases accordingly!
To top it off, if one cannot afford the price or payment no matter the exchange rate, it's all moot!

Your last sentence belies your point. The price is the price. Some folks can make the price out of pocket change, some have to save for years. This is true regardless of their country of origin. A discount would be granting someone a purchase at less than the price paid by others.
The fact that a buyer has more money is irrelevant, whether he won it at the casino, earned it with a shovel, robbed a bank, or waited for a favorable exchange rate.

Thanks for the laugh.
I also was taught in school (way back) that anybody from either North or South America was American. When in Beautiful British Columbia I would say U.S. when asked where I lived.
You folks do spell Okanogan incorrectly.
I have moved back to the Okanogan Valley and got a fancy driver license so I can head over the boundary again, eh.

this has been an interesting topic for me as a Canadian, who spends a lot of time in the US. Without getting too political, here are my views:
I buy things where i feel i get the best deal
I live three hours from the Sault Michigan border, and cross there at least every three months or so. I stay in a motel that costs me $60.00 US a night, it is clean tidy and quiet. it is family run, and the owners are wonderful people. Even with the horrendous exchange (I paid 38 cents on the dollar 2 weeks ago), that price is still cheaper than a room in a regular hotel in most places this side of the border.
Gasoline with the exchange works out to about $.55 per litre or 220. per gallon
Our gas runs $.98 per litre locally.
most groceries, and many hard/soft goods are still cheaper even with the exchange
If a Canadian stays in the US for 48 hours (2 overnights) he/she can bring back up to $800.00 Canadian in goods, not counting groceries.
My wife and I travel together, we bring back very close to our limits each trip, plus groceries, and we have a nice mini vacation, cheaper than a weekend shopping trip here in northern Ontario.
In the summer we get a non resident pass, and stay in various sites thanks to Michigans DNR, both primitive and Regular sites for Fractions of what I would pay in Ontario.
Am I jealous, a bit, but obviously I want to live in Canada, as I haven't moved to the US.
I think rather than arguing the semantics of value for Dollar, it makes more sense to look at "what it's worth to you", I can trade, barter ,and buy, preferably in that order and get by most of the time, sometimes in the states, sometimes in Canada, But I do what makes me smile, and sometimes even giggle a bit, and try to be happy
