Eastern TN/Western NC campground recommendations

Hi all,

Any recommendations for eastern TN/western NC campgrounds?

Maybe Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Smoky Mountains area?

Have children around 10 yrs old, so something like fishing/other interesting activities would be a great bonus!

Thank you for any ideas!!

Roan Mountain State Park in Carter County TN is a jewel. The Doe River runs right through the campground and the top of the mountain is covered in rhododendrons in June.

Cades Cove, Smokemont and Elkmont are three NPS campgrounds that are open. Most of the developed campgrounds in Nantahala NF are still closed but may be an option in the future. Lots of rafting companies - We like Nantahala Outdoor Center. Great Smokey Mountain Railroad is a nice trip. Plenty of fly fishing opportunities all over the Smokies. The wildlife loop at Cades Cove is worth it even if you don't camp there. Get a MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) from the National Forests offices (Nantahala, Pisgah and Cherokee are all nearby) and explore some of the backroads (ask the staff for recommendations based on the type of vehicle you have). Plenty of waterfalls to check out - some are roadside and others require short to long hikes. Cradle of Forestry and Sliding Rock (kids will love it) in Pisgah NF.

Stayed a few days in Cumberland Mountain State Park in TN a few weeks ago. A lovely park with lots to do and lots of waterfalls nearby.
The park restaurant has a well deserved reputation for a great dinner buffet, but due to COVID it should be avoided. We ate there in early June and it was the worst restaurant meal I've ever had.
