The southernmost point of the US is actually Hawaii, not Key West. And, FWIW, the Easternmost, Westernmost and Northermost points in the US are in Alaska. (one of those trick quiz questions...)

I think Melissa meant to call it the farthest southern point in the contiguous 48 states, just like Kevin K referred to.

Then, Geographic Center (or re) of North America

Spotted this gem of a waypoint on the side of a U-Haul Moving Van and decided to check it out. We were on our way back from Thompson, Manitoba, end-of-the-road north in central North America. It's south-west of Winnipeg, at Rugby, ND.

Well, even that would be somewhat debatable, insomuch that Key West isn't technically contiguous, as in "attached physically to the mainland" any more than Hawaii is. They are both located on a chain of islands...

Since Kansas was mentioned, the largest ball of string is in Cawker City and it's right on the main street.

Well somehow I don't think the Easternmost part of the U.S.can be in Alaska, please explain.

The earth gets smaller diameter near the poles, and the longitude lines (the north-to-south lines) get closer together there. Those lines actually meet at the poles. So if you look at a globe with longitude lines on it, you'll see that eastern Alaska hits a longitude line that's farther east than Maine.

You can drive to Key West, it is really tough to drive to Hawaii. Your car gets soggy and hard to start.

Ummmm.... Mike...

Excuse me, but....

Got a globe or a map handy? I hate to have to be the bearer of bad news and break it to you, but....

The actual reason is that there are a couple of teeny island bits that are so far WEST they are actually past the international date line (which has NOTHING to do with a 1-800 number!) which makes their longitude reading as EAST.

Other than that, the farthest east part of Alaska (in the conventional sense) is way down in the panhandle and it is still WAY west of any part of the contiguous 48

What I was alluding to was the fact that part of the Aleutian Island chain (part of Alaska) is actually beyond the international date line, so it then becomes "East" according to longitude and time zones, etc. BCDave got it.
Although you can drive to Key West, its still at the end of an island chain, so technically isn't really part of the "mainland" proper. But then, I just enjoy arguing stupid meaningless points for the heck of it. When it all comes down to brass tacks, the whole argument doesn't much matter really. Just having some fun.
